Why is it only a big issue when Sarah Palin resigns?

Pop quiz: Who was the last popular politician to resign his office to run for the presidency? Bob Dole. How many people insulted and attacked him for it? None that I know of. Can anyone name the senator who didn't finish ONE term before resigning to become president? Barrack Obama. The man didn't complete a single term as Senator, and spent 2 of his three years in office ignoring his job, missing votes, and phoning it in while he ran for president. Several politicians, including governors, have resigned over the last year without finishing their terms and I haven't seen threads criticizing them here on mylot. Even the disgraced governor Blagojevich has been treated better both on mylot and in the media than Sarah Palin. With Palin we have so many ridiculous accusations that the FBI has now felt it necessary to make an official statement saying that she is NOT under any kind of investigation. http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/07/06/sarah.palin.fbi/index.html Now there are threads attacking her based solely on the SPECULATION that she may run for the presidency. Frankly, I don't think she'll run in 2012 and I hope she doesn't. This is a good time for her to spend time with her family and focus any outside energy on non-profit work. Hopefully with her out of office the left won't feel the need to direct perverted attacks her and her daughters every time they do an event for autism. So the big question now. Can any of those attacking her explain to me why they're not attacking other politicians who resign their posts? Since many of her attackers voted for Obama I was wondering if any of them could explain why it was OK for Obama to ignore his job for 2/3 of the time he was in office before resigning without even finishing HALF of his first term.

This is just another example of the double standard for liberals and conservatives. The primary reason that these liberals hate Palin is because she did not abort her son. The rest of the hatred stem from the fact that Palin represents and lives everything that the liberals have always wanted in the modern woman... success and power. The problem is that she is also a Christian and believes in traditional family values.... and she is a conservative. They cannot stand this. Then there is the fact that Palin scares the hell out of them.

There is no answer to this query as the question is faulty. First of all, Palin is not the only politician, resigned or not, to be attacked. And they certainly didn't wait for her resignation to do so. When you enter the arena of politics you know that this is part of the territory. The other part of your quesion, regarding Obama, is equally faulty. To even suggest that he ignored his job is ludicrous - this man has dedicated his life to public service and has done this so successfully that he is now the president of the United States of America. How dare you even compare the two individuals?

was that an obama support? i don't live in the states, thank god, but i've seen all the crticism going on here and some of it just seems ridiculous to me. you'vw got an average politician who appears to mean well - and if you have any idea of history hitler was a nasty bit of work and nothing like what you have right now

hitler was evil. the nazis' vicious ideas emerged at a point in time when they were accepted but even then they had to introduce the anti-jewish thing slowly. i think comparing an average politician to hitler diminishes an awful period of history and makes the person doing it look like they don't have a clue what they're on about.

And HItler was praised as a savior. People fainted at his speeches and people thought every thing he did was amazing. People were soon afraid to speak up against him once he consolidated his power too. Organizing community groups and pretending to be a real senator? Wow!

During the last presidential campaign Illinois, New York and Arizona all had one Senator representing them full time. If Senator McCain had been elected you would have 3 Senators return to the senate after failing to further their political careers. Is that fair to the people of the state?

I'm in Illinois and I was kind of glad to have Obama gone, not that he did anything here anyway. But little did I know he'd become president!

Your title is the question "Why is it only a big issue when Sarah Palin resigns?" I suppose if there ever had been another politician in an even remotely similar situation it would be every bit as big as issue but there hasn't been so far. You mentioned former Senator and GOP Presidential candidate Bob Dole but that's not a good comparison at all. It's been about 13 years ago so please forgive me if I don't have the dates or details exactly right but as I recall Dole had clinched the nomination and resigned from his senate seat in June of 1996 and the RNC Convention was in August, I think. I can't remember who the interviewer was but I clearly remember him using the words, when talking about leaving the Senate, "It's either the White House or home." There was no question as to what he was going to do next or if he was planning to run for a higher office because he was already the nominee! In 2004 John Edwards finished his Senate term but didn't run for reelection while he ran for President and then Vice President. Last year we had several U.S. Senators and a few Representatives who ran for President while still holding their offices. Joe Biden ran for V.P. and Senator at the same time as did Joe Lieberman in 2000. As it turned out Obama, Biden and later Hillary Clinton all resigned from the Senate seats to take their new positions in the Executive Branch. There have been others who have resigned as members of Congress or Governors to take other jobs in an Administration and there have certainly been those who have left due to family or health concerns. Of course, then there are those like former Governor Blagojevich who have resigned or been removed in disgrace because of a legal or ethical problem. Taskr, are you serious when you claim that "Even the disgraced governor Blagojevich has been treated better both on mylot and in the media than Sarah Palin"? Believe me, I'm sure not saying Blago deserved to be treated any better, but BE SERIOUS! I'd almost have to say that he's handled the heat better than Palin, though! He and his wife, for their obvious flaws, have managed to keep their kids out of the public eye, haven't they? I know, that was somehow a horrible thing to say so I guess I should apologize now and get it over with! Taskr, would you mind if I finished this post by asking you a simple and honest question? What did you REALLY think of Palin's speech on Friday? Did you think it made sense or do you agree with everyone else that it was jumbled and confusing? I'm not saying this to "attack" her, something which I know you won't believe, but I found it seriously a bit troubling. Annie

Holy $hit, II2aTee, what those two posted had nothing at all to do with what I posted, did it? I tried to address the topic of the discussion and answer the question the OP asked and suddenly I'm part of a "pattern" of hatred or whatever...WTF did I SAY...lol? Annie

I don't know one way or another if she was a good govenor or if she'd have made a good vp. I don't know if she could have been, because until she was jumped on and her kids became objects of hatred, I didn't pay much attention to her. I just feel that she and her family are the targets of a smear campaign...or mob violence. Kinda like a feeding frenzy of hatred, once it got started it wouldn't stop. And it makes me very angry to see anyone, even an obviously crooked politician like Blagojevich, treated with such venom. I like comedy but even that has gotten out of bounds lately. It just seems to me our entire culture has become venomous and hateful. We all pretty much agreed that to pick on kids like that by anyone is wrong. A politician does put themselves out for public consumption, this is true. But it just seem to me that the last few years things have gotten way out of hand in the press and in discussions and blog on the internet.

i think palin has been seen as an easy target because she has sometimes come across as not very bright. the media can be pretty nasty sometimes and prefers victims that don't bite back very well

this could go on for ages. obama seems to be ok but he's obviously infuritating the conservatives here. palin is a twit, but not necessarily a horrible person, and she has clearly got an awful lot of defenders here

hitler was evil. i'm sorry but average politicians are nowhere near that. please don't try and use e.g. facism or communism as a way to slag off politicians you don't agree with. the reality was that these were vicious in practice and absolutlely nothing like what is going on now

And obama was a shinning example of brightness when he didn't know how many states are in the United States? I find that real scarey. Not knowing how to spell potato pales in comparison.

You know, the fact that Mr. Obama resigned his senate seat hadn't occured to me. And Dole too? Thanks for pointing this out.

President Obama didn't resign his Senate seat until right before he was inaugurated. Annie

NO...he just left it hanging and the people of Illinois had no representation. I remember looking at his voting record trying to make up my mind about him early on....he was absent and a abstain more than anything. At least Palin had the decency to say she wouldn't be able to do the job justice and step down and let someone else have a go at it.

Since I made a discussion about this, I will speak to it. Mostly because politics are so polarized these days. If you dont love Sarah Palins every decision, then you MUST be attacking her. The same can be said for Obama, so dont think I dont see it. I could care less what Palin does from here on out... I personally have written her off. I could easily wake up tomorrow and never give her a second thought. The only reason I would have a problem is if she decides to run for president after claiming that it was too difficult to get business done in Alaska because she had too many law suits. Shes in a world of shock if she thinks being a Senator or President is any easier. All I'm doing is commenting on the niavite of the people who think this decision will spring board her into a higher political career. It's entertaining to me at the moment. [i]"Now there are threads attacking her based solely on the SPECULATION that she may run for the presidency. Frankly, I don't think she'll run in 2012 and I hope she doesn't. This is a good time for her to spend time with her family and focus any outside energy on non-profit work. To be honest, I didn't even know that Dole had done that. And I'm glad that the rumors of the investigastion are false. Additionally, I hope she does sue that blogger ( Shannyn Moore) who keeps making those accusations.

The people attacking Sarah Palin are attacking her because they really think she's a major threat! They may talk about her like she has no sense, just a dummy, but, I believe, in reality, they are really afraid of her! Otherwise, why would they continue to attack her if she was no threat at all? Haven't there been governors who quit their jobs to be in other administrations? I was thinking there was a woman who resigned to work for President Bush but can't remember her name. These people attacking don't realize they are actually making Sarah Palin more familiar to everyone. And more and more people are coming on board with her!

I think Sarah Palin did the best thing for all parties involved. I can only hope that her motivation isn't to concentrate harder on the lower 48. . .
