lying habit

one of my close relatives has this habit of lying unnecessarily. his lies do not harm anyone, but he just cannot stop himself from lying. apart from that, he has a lot of affection for people. he is quite active and an efficient guy too. but, i do not know why he lies so much. have you encountered such people ? how did you handle them ? i want to help him get rid of this habit.
