Hobbling Around...

Well, it’s taken 7 days but I’m finally starting to get around again. Last Monday while at my Mom’s I was lifting my Grandma. She’s almost 80, bed bound and weighs around 150 lbs. dead weight. Now, I know I’m not supposed to be lifting her since I’ve pulled my back out a couple of times doing it and pulled my knee out before too. But we were in the middle of giving her a bath so there wasn’t a lot of options. Well, sure enough by the time I got done lifting her like 4 times my knee felt like someone was sticking a knife through it. I figured I’d go home, get some rest and it would be better. No such luck, the next day it still hurt terribly and I could barely stand on it. This went on for about 3 days before I could hobble around, holding onto walls for support. Finally on the fourth day I decided it was well enough for a quick trip to the store…I was wrong. Halfway through the store I had to quit b/c I knew I could not stand on it any longer. I got home and it hurt as much as it did the first day I hurt it. I spent the next three days, including today, being extremely gentle with it. It’s finally healing up to where I can get around a little easier but it’s still really tender.
I’ve told my Mom that unless there’s a fire, I’m not lifting Grandma anymore. Since Hubby can't get out, I’m the only one that can do our bills, shopping, taking trash out, getting mail or taking care of the house…I can’t be broken and unable to walk. I don’t blame anyone else b/c I knew better but I guess it took something this bad to make me see.
Have you ever lifted something (or someone) and pulled muscles? Have you ever hurt yourself and wondered if you’d ever heal? How many other ppl depend on you to not end up broken?

well I havent really lifted anyone except my kids and they are both ages 6 and 18 months so I dont have a problem with that for now......but I have done things such as lift things that I thought I could help out with and end up dropping things on my feet and hurt for a day or two... I have twisted the wrong way and pulled a hamstring... and I have pulled muscles in my arms or neck and for a couple days wonder why I did that in the first place!!
It is good to hear that you are at least back to getting around again...and yes, no more lifting your grandma!!!!
Happy mylotting!!

I know how you feel but mine is my back, I in fact just hurt it again a couple of days ago and have had to baby it and I am still taking it easy, it sucks! I often wonder when it will stop when it starts up. Lifting, bending ... just about anything will set it off at times it seems and yes I think it will never go away.
We have 3 kids at home 16,14, and 2 and then there is my husband so I do have people that depend on me and when this happens sometimes I feel as thou I am letting them down. *sigh*

Yikes--you can lift 150lb grandma???
Oh the joys of getting older though, right? WRONG
As far as wondering if I'd ever heal...for some time now I've had a bad strained wrist..NOW...if I were smart I would take at least a whole week off from any chores, cleaning, shopping, taking out garbage that for some reason feels like it has rocks in it, and........typing, but since I live alone I have to rely on myself to do everything...unless of course I could train my two cats to clean and type for me...LOL
Many years ago though, I did a real number on my back too...I had a severe muscle spasm in my back and couldn't lie down, stand, sit without wanting to punch a wall since I was in so much pain...I had the smarts then to finally find a position lying on the bed and didn't move one bit--I was almost back to normal by the next day then but still took it easy

Glad to hear that you knee is getting better now.
I strained my back back when I was 13 then hurt it again when a car run into the back of us it has not been right since.
So I have to be careful lifting things now as I can end up in pain if I am not careful.
I hurt my back last year after I got pushed in a crowd and as I fell back I tripped over my sons pushchair I was laid up for a couple of days and it was agony.
I have my partner and my children all relying on me so can not afford to get hurt.

I am ALWAYS doing something to myself, seriously spraining ankles, lifting more than I should and messing up my back, blew out my shoulder helping my husband tear shingles off our roof. You name it and i've pretty much done it. I just don't seem to know my limit. Fortunately for me, my household is pretty much self sufficient, it's just my husband, my 17 year old son, and myself.
It's reached the point that when I start to do something like trying to move or lift something heavy, if my kids or husband see it they are yelling at me to stop and they will take over. I've had my grown daughters over and they will take stuff away from me that I am carrying because they know that I am such a clutz.
My most recent injury was falling UP the stairs and breaking a finger. That was classic.
Hoping you are feeling better soon!

i have knee issues and find it hard to walk around a whole lot but we indeed are a sandwich generation because we have kids that need our attention as well as parents that need our help. my fil has lost his license and cannot drive so we drive him around all the time to get groceries etc, plus, my dad passed away in february and my hubby usually ends up going there and doing outside work. its tiring.

I am so glad that you are getting better after hurting your knee so badly. I hope that there are other family members who will be able to assist your mother in this task. I used to bather my husband for the last 8 months or so of his life. I did not mind doing this at all as he could still walk to the bathroom. It was because he did not want his sons to see his body so shrunken that he asked me to do it. Our sons would have gladly done it for him. It really wasn't a problem for me though. Blessings

Sorry to hear about your knee, I haven't pulled mine but I know some people that have. You better be careful, you don't need to be doing that because you could end up causing permanent damage. I know a woman that lifted her husband like that and messed her back up. She had to stay out of work for a month, and it still isn't healed.
