I'd have to say the main thing is the pen... paper is not the only thing you can write on. Your hand is always available, as well as most likely other materials. Without the writing utensil it doesn't matter if you have paper or anything else, because you have no way to write things down.

I was going to say the same thing. If you have a pen you can almost always find something to write on--ground, walls, fabric, whatever. But if you have paper and no pen there isn't much you can do, except maybe make a paper plane or origami swan or something.

I was actually think paper but then i thought you can write on almost anything but you coulnt if you didnt have a pen.
