~~~Are you travelling far in the next few months...?
Well I renewed my passport not so many weeks ago, thinking that I may go to India in December and could have the opportunity to go ahead and get a tourist visa...
Well more recently it all started seeming like too much money... Then just over a week ago I was at Glastonbury Festival. Greenpeace the environmental campaigners had an exhibition there about airport expansion. It seemed truly horrendous, that if the 3rd runway at Heathrow airport, close to London gets the go-ahead it will destroy a lovely, idyllic village, not to mention further contribution to global warming.
In short, I have to made a good justification to myself to use air travel now...
This summer I'm going on several camps and weekends away, but they will all be in the South-West of England where I live. The furtherest destination will not be much more than a hundred miles away (approx 160km). Though I travelled by bus to Glasto - thought it would make for a more interesting experience apart from anything else - will be travelling otherwise by car; albeit, it's a 1 litre eco-engine job. Buses and coaches generally just take far too l o n g . . . Besides the fact, with camping it's generally useful to take a variety of stuff!Well, I'd like to know your thoughts... travelling far in the next few months???
I actually have a long-distance trip in the works fairly soon. My mum is 87 and lives in the south of Spain, and I live in the northwestern US (Washington state), and she recently went into a nursing home because caring for herself had become too much for her.
The trip from here will take me 3 hours by bus to the Seattle airport; then a 9-hour flight to Heathrow; coach transfer to Gatwick; night in an airport hotel there; then early morning flight to Gibraltar, which is the closest airport to her (about 20km). All in all, the trip covers about 9500km, each way.
Hey! Quite a journey! Sounds well justified, as I guess you may feel it a kinda "now or never" type of trip to make. Besides global warming we have also had financial meltdown (almost), but from what I have read from various commentators it is part of the transfer of wealth from English speaking nations to the far East, such as China or India. Come to that, Europe as well. In the years ahead I think we will all have to learn to live with a lot less in material terms, conversely there is a good chance that people will come closer together (look on the positive)
I am glad that you enjoyed the Glastonbury Festival. I like quite near that area. I go to the town a few times a year. I like looking around the crystal shops. I also enjoy walking up the Tor. India is quite a cheap destination to go to. However a few trips in your home country might eat up your travel budget. I am too weak for traveling now but I am dreaming of my trip that I have planned to Canada in 2010. If I am well enough I hope to have a long weekend in Yorkshire in October. I would like to visit the Captain Cook Festival. If I go there then I will travel by train and bus. It is interesting to travel on public transport I think.
Thank you for your varied response. I guess that a music festival is not everyone's cup of tea. It was quite strange to catch the shuttle bus back to Glastonbury town after the festival. Apart from a few cafes/ pubs everything was shut in the town. Even stranger was seeing no silhouettes of people walking up the Tor. It soon became clear why, as traffic was very restricted coming into the town, to let the traffic heading away from the festival get a clear run. There were a few moans at the bus stop in town from some locals, as no regular service buses were running from there to other towns. Their was a notice at the bus stop (close to the town hall) telling us we had to walk to the outskirts were the bus stop had been relocated. Fortunately, the town is not too big, so we didn't have far to walk! It was quite amusing as a few passing motorists who had come from the festival perped their horns, as they saw a few of us with our big rucksacks, who had obviously also come from the festival!
No dates confirmed yet, but I do have to travel on my business trips to Europe and the Asia-Pacific Region. The schedule is not finalized yet. In fact I am hoping I could come to England too. It has been many years since I visited England. I have been to India too a few times. Beautiful country, many wonders to see, starting from the Taj Mahal !
Jet aircraft is one of the biggest causes of pollution in our world, we live close to a small international airport and the number of flight that fly over our ranch is amazing, one truly wonders why that many jets must come and go here, there can't possibly be that many people that need to come or go here. We need to slow down and rethink our mad helter-skelter society.
Thanks, Savy, for your well thought out response! This is a tricky one for me, really. Undertook a round-the-world trip back in May 1990 to May 91; most of the miles were travelled by jet. Have done a fair amount of air travel, since age 18, but has really tailed off in the last few years. If nothing else the global economic downturn will be good for the environment! As my opening statement indicates, I would still consider air travel, just that it would have to be well justified! One thing that I have found astonishing, when I think about it is the number of British people who have bought second homes in Europe, based on the availability of cheap flights.
Been to Heathrow airport years ago when i had a 12 hour stop over there... and i really like that airport because it is like one big mall... so many things to see and even buy... but quite expensive... my daughter and i will be going to Kota Kinabalu next year... i was able to purchase tickets on sale at an airline that operates her in my province... and it would be a waste not to take advantage of that... she will be 4 years old by that time... and she has a passport already... so we are good to go... just need to save more money for hotel and other expenses...
