Is a total ban on plastic bags a bad idea?

Heaps and heaps of plastic bags get dumped daily into our oceans and even worse than this garbage is the garbage that these plastic bags have inside them! But slowly the world is rising to the situation and realizing the adverse effects of polluting the environment. It is said that a traditional plastic bag takes up to 1000 years to degrade!!!!!! On one hand, we should not be using or encouraging the use of plastic bags as it pollutes the environment. On the other hand, plastic bags are a good alternative to paper. We also have to keep in mind that we should be saving our environment too. By using paper we cut down trees which are THE MOST important factor in maintaining environmental balance. Paper can be recycled but any how trees will have to be cut to make paper! So what do you think should be a solution to this problem? Should there be a complete ban on plastic bags? Or should there be restrictive use on both plastic bags and paper bags? How, any ideas?

I don't think there should be a ban on them, I think they should find a way to recycle them like everything else. or do they already recycle them? I know now there trying to get everyone to use their own tote bags instead of plastic, I don't know how that's working.

Some stores like Whole Foods will give you a credit if you bring in your own bags, I think it's only a nickel a bag, but it's better than nothing.

No its not a bad idea to ban plastics. its ruining our life. also it will affect the coming generations very badly. i feel its our responsibility to avoid plastics as far as possible . otherwise the coming generation will have a serious impact

I think supermarkets are starting to promote using cloth tote bags for the shoppers to use when they buy their groceries. I think that is a good alternative to paper or plastic bag. We just have to develop the habit of bringing these cloth bags with us when we go for groceries. Only problem I see is that some people are not willing to spend around $3-$4 each for the bags. Maybe the supermarkets/shops can give the bags for free for a minimum amount of purchase so that their customers will be encouraged to buy a bit more just so that they will not have to pay for the bag itself. I don't think an immediate total ban for plastic bags should be made, these kinds of changes should be made gradually and the people have to be educated why they should cooperate with projects like these.

I think plastic bag shouldn't be banned but it should be limited to use. Yes we can also use an alternative like paper bags but like what you said trees will be lessen. We should plant more trees for this matter so that even we use paper bags we still have as much trees we need. And another alternative way to lessen the use of plastic bags and paper bags is that people should bring their own bags (cloth) or baskets whenever they go to groceries or shops.

The environment impact of plastic bag has become such a large problem,so ban on the use of plastic bags is a good idea. But because of its high usage by most of the people in many countries,I think it' some what difficult to totally ban the usage of plastic bags, but we can reduce the consumption of it.

Here the plastic bags are not offered. I know the paper bag can be also another bad thing for the environment because there are many trees have to be cut. I think the best solution is to bring your own cloth bag when you go out. I get used to it already. When I go out, I will have a cloth bag in my handbag or bag. Since it is small and folder, it is still convenient and good for the environment. I love China

The issue is a little bit more complicated. Plastic is made from hydrocarbon, or better known as petroleum. This is a natural product which is not renewable. If we are talking about the environment and the future, then there should be a complete ban. Trees can be replanted, and this is actually being done to feed the paper industry. If done properly the replanting cycle may meet most of the demand. Based on this fact the paper bag option is better. Many of us prefer plastic bags because they are more convenient to carry, and waterproof. I have seen paper bags which have been coated with a chemical to make them waterproof. Unfortunately this adds to the cost of producing them. This could be the reason why water resistant paper bags are not widely available. Currently the best option would be to discourage the use of plastic bags.

I think paper bags degrade faster than plastic, but then there's the issue of trees....and using up natural resources. If you ban plastic bags, what would you ue to replace them? There are some places that supply boxes rather than bags, but I don't know that that is any better. I try to use reuseable cloth bags. If plastic bags were banned, then maybe more of us would choose this option. In some countries, plastic bags are not banned, but they are available only at a price. That forces people to recycle them and use them as long as possible.. and as much as possible, maybe that is an option to be considered.

Hello zeethegr8 and friends this is checkmail and do think there must be complete ban on use of plastic bags as they are one of the main reason for polluting our environment especially water(rivers and sea). But we can't completely ban the plastic as some materials do need plastic and it can't be avoided.Yes we can minimise the use of plastics to a very certain level.Donot use when other alternatives are available.Awarness should be spread among the other peoples as well as our peoples for utilising plastics carefully and in efficient manner.Recycling plastics is also a very good source of avoiding plastic pollution.Even the papers should be used efficiently, don't waste it, though it is recycled it is scare in nature. If we start conversion of certain materials we could have a balanced environment cutting out pollution to its minimum. As the effects of pollution is hazardous to health , we must initiate steps today in order to avoid wastage of resources. And also to inform others about it and stop peoples who are doing it.We need not be shy in this kind of subject or else will have to face our fate due to our shyness. Well GoodLuck all try to be conservative with our available resources.
