Hi, friend. Development of programming skills requires a lot of practice. I was a Java beginner around the age of 13-14, and after 6 years, I still feel that there is a lot to learned. I am currently working on a 3 D game in Java.
You need good books on programming with regular programming practice. The kickstart books damage the basics and thus can not improve the skills beyond a particular level. So, start with a complete reference book like Java How To Program By Deitel. You can download good books from sites like freebooksclub.net, freetechbooks, free-ebooks, torrentz, getfreebooks, freebooksource etc. But, books can not help you tweaking your code performance-wise and can not provide problem specific techniques. For, this you can take help of online coding forums.
I am also maintaining a blog named Programmers` paradise. It is new and has not much material on it but i am going to post quality programming techniques (about once a week)on the blog and develop some reusable software. So, if you have a problem, you can look out on the blog. The link is:

Also, you can always ask me any problem via mail on THEcreationist@rediffmail.com
But, mind it, it requires regular practice. Happy Mylotting!!

Hmmm... Cant say that I can give you any tips. However, I am going into software development in college in the next few months. They say that Pascal is what we are going to be using this year, followed by HTML. Next year we are going to be using and programming in Java. Java is a difficult programing language. A simple Hello World program is pretty difficult to program in my opinion. The best thing to do is to remember some key skills, syntax, and the like. Then once you have mastered remembering the basics, move on. Take it gradually, use snippets or examples of code from tutorials, take them apart, see what does what. Thats how I learnt ActionScript in flash. Thats the only advice I can give you.
Also, try and explore other Object-Orientated programming languages too :) I have heard VB.net is pretty good too!
Good luck in your studies :)
