I want to open this discussion for all mylotters, not just American citizens. If you know some about how and why America was founded, what do you think made the beginnings of the USA different and/or great? Then, explain why you think America is great NOW. If you feel it is NOT great now, tell me why?

America was started by people who wanted to be free of the shackles of an oppressive and tyrannical government, and who were willing to fight and die for that freedom.
Individual liberty, innovation, and the love of God and of freedom made this country great.
Now, we are once again faced with slavery under the shackles of an oppressive and tyrannical government, all because people forgot how we became great, and how we won our freedom.
We have become secular humanists who believe in moral relativism instead of God, and that will be our downfall.

I couldn't agree with you more! And Christians allowed to happen by becoming lukewarm, by forgetting their first love. We allowed ourselves to become proud and to overlook evil for the sake of ease and profit.

I will not go into the beginning of America, but to the present. I am not an american (actually I do live in America, but in South America, apparently there´s only one America :P). I really don´t like the USA because they are really cruel. They are always attacking other countries, such as Vietnam, Irak, Afghanistan, and many more examples. They wanted to attack Cuba, and nowadays they still are blocking their economy. They were behind ALL the dictatorships in latinoamerica in the 70s, in my country, for example, 30.000 people were dissapeared (killed and the bodies hidden, so there were no bodies), this dictatorship was encouraged by the United States (nowadays there are no doubts about it), and this happened in many other latinoamerican countries. They killed Saddam Hussein (I don´t think Saddam was good, but I definetly don´t agree in killing anyone). They supported the destitution of president Chavez (in Venezuela) when the army took the power for 2 days. They tried to do the same one year ago in Bolivia (with Evo Morales). Now with Barack Obama they are having a better attitude like in the case of Zelaya, claiming to give back the country to the right president. They have been torturing in Iraq, Guantanamo, and many other places, and Bush agreed and give permission to do so.
In few words, the United States have killed lots of people all around the word, and most of americans are so close minded that they think that people all over the world loves the states, however, many polls indicate exactly the opposite, in most countries of the world, people don´t really support the actions that USA is taking. All this things are changing with Obama.
There are many other things I don´t like, and of course there are wonderful things, but overall the USA has really bad attitudes, and really close minded positions in every conflict.
I really don´t want to make anyone angry, I am just saying my point of view of the USA politics. Most of the people in the states, are surely great, and don´t neccesarily agree with all the things the presidents have done (or maybe they don´t know).
