Expensive train journey

I looked up a train ticket fare for a six and a half hour journey in my home country. It was for midweek dates and the fare was more than one hundred pounds. All the cheaper tickets went rather quickly it seems. I know that I could fly across Europe in a plane for that sort of money. Does your home country have expensive, reasonable or cheap train fares? What are the trains like in the countries you have been to?

Many times there is nothing better than the car. You drive off with the family - stop when you wish - eat and drink when you want - listen to the radio/watch TV/watch a DVD as you go (well for the passengers anyway) - and you have transport when you get the other end. By train? Well you have to get from home to the station with all your luggage then drag your luggage half a mile up and down stairs to get to the platform. Then maybe you have to cross a city from one terminal to another to continue your journey. More stairs and walking. Then you get to the destination station and have to organise transport to where you want to go. A pain! By air is worse. Two hours by taxi or train to the airport. Must book in two hours before the flight. Miles to walk between check-in and the plane. An hour to wait for your luggage (if it has arrived!). Then an hour or more to bus/taxi/train to your final destination. And that is a domestic flight! So. Please build more and better roads and of a superior specification so that you don't have to repair it a year after it was opened creating more jams.

It is there everywhere. In my country, flight bookings are like this. All cheap tickets are sold very easily.in trains, we have expensive tickets for less compartments and these disappears soon.Rather cheap tickets are there for some days.

I found the same thing here in California. The train tickets were almost (if not the same) price for an airline ticket. And it takes much, much longer to travel by rail. Although it probably is a pretty ride, I prefer to fly and I don't like flying. From what I've heard the trains are decent here, comfortable and all that with nice clean amenities and expensive food. There's also rooms to sleep in.

Hi max, how is the new daughter? In Australia, travelling by train used to be by far the best and cheapest way to travel. However nowadays, with cheao air fares it's much quicker and cheaper to fly. Have a nice day.

I know what youmean! Myself and my husband were going to London a while back now and it was cheaper for us to fly than travel by train! How can they expect us to be greener if they charge more the the less green service?!

I just got back from a short trip to Goa (India). The cost of the ticket for an AC chair was around $13 per head. It was 11 -12 hours journey. I really don't like traveling that long, but what to do, it is cheaper to consider trains than to travel by plane. I know this country still serves cheaper price rather than my country. But sometimes when we need to go to other countries, theirs is sometimes cheaper or rather expensive than in our own country.

I spent several months in Europe a few years ago. I bought a Eurail pass. It was the greatest thing I ever did! The trains were fantastic. I did a lot of traveling in 3 months, but only had problems with train delays twice. I do know that the tickets can get expensive, though. In the US, the train system sucks! I live in the northeast, so there are some passenger trains. But you never know if they will be on time or not. They arent taken care of nearly as well in Europe and they are quite expensive! Last year, I took the train into the city - about 20 miles each way - and the ticket cost me $11. It just seemed crazy for such a short trip!
