Well....when I really analyse it, I think it is the tune. Coz if it was really the lyrics, it would not explain why I like Flightless Bird (the lyrics are totally meaningless). And it would also not explain why I can listen to foreign language songs without understanding what they are singing about - only that it is not evil!
But then I would REALLY LOVE the song if the lyrics are also good. That would make me buy the album.

i would have to say heavy chugging electric guitar and great vocals, and those drums, man slipknot gets me going pretty hard.

The main thing that makes a song beautiful is ofcourse the lyrics. Then, to make the lyrics attractive, the music must be beautiful too !! It all goes together. For example, I like the song "Love Me Tender" so much. The lyric is excellent, and the music that accompanies is just so sweet !
Good luck to you !

I tend to like songs that are produced really well. Of course the music is important, and I tend to prefer songs with interesting tonalities and syncopation, but even the most musically interesting song won't be a favorite of mine unless it is produced well. Production of course refers to the process of recording and constructing the track.
There are a few artists in particular that always have a really good or interesting production: Tom Waits, Fionna Apple, Fatboy Slim, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Soul Coughing, Les Claypool, Devo, Herbaliser, and of course Gnarls Barkley.

the first thing that catch my attention in a song is the melody. if it has a good melody, then i would start off there and would eventually try to look for the lyrics to see if it's good. most of the songs that i love both have melodies and lyrics that are really really good; that i can identify with. now, about your question, you want to make a song that could attract all kinds of people. chances are, you can't. i'm not questioning your ability as a musician and i actually commend you for the thing that you want to do. music may be universal but not all genres have an appeal to everyone which is the reason why there are so, so many genres nowadays and they still keep on evolving. making a song is a tricky thing because if you aren't used to do it, it sometimes divide you on making it for yourself or making it for the listeners. what you can do is make a song that is really how or what you feel about something during that time. i mean you cannot make people like a song per se because whether they like a song or not actually depends on them. usually if a song/singer sounds sincere or real, that's what makes people like it. :) good luck. :)

The overall package: Lyrics, melody, beat, and depth. Too many songs today have a catchy hook or groove, but lack substance. I don't know who decides what gets played on the radio, but so much of it is junk.
