One of the basic cooking fuel before LPG was introduced is charcoal. And I think that even with LPG, there are still lots of people using charcoal. They are still being used in our place to grill and cook barbeque along the streets, in the market. How do you put charcoal to start flaming, to keep it burning so you can start cooking? Do you use newspapers? Or do you use kerosene or other fuel aid? Please stop using rubber for this purpose, it's harmful to environment...

we first soak the charcoal with charcoal fluid then we get a small piece of newspaper and light it and throw in on the charcoal. if it goes out we add a little more charcoal fluid. be carefully do not get to close to the charcoal you do not want to get burnt.

dear happy,
grahamiv responded above, and mentioned about "started fluid". is it the same fluid you are trying to say here, charcoal fluid? sounds interesting in your place that you have these kinds of charcoal starter aids. these should be brought to our place so we can stop using rubber or kerosene for this matter.

Well now, this all depends on the charcoal. Some have "Starter Fluid" (Similiar to lighter fluid) added to them so all you have to do is light it with a match and it instantly starts burning. Others you can try just lighting with a match or lighter and they may get hot enough to start burning. Of coarse you can use starter fluid and if you use it right it doesnt require very much. You can also add small pieces to help. If you use the right wood, it can add a very nice flavor as well.

Hi Neil,
Well the only way we light charcoal is with firelighter, its a special stuff you use with wood and paper to get it lighted, very easy and quick, but haven't done a BBQ for a long while yet. Hugs.

Take an old can (coffee or fruit can), only metal. Take away both top and bottom. Put some newspaper (wringed) with charcoal and the can on top. Light with a single match. When it´s going I use the hairdryer to have more wind. If you want to be still more environmental fan, use a cardboard as a fan. I hated that
Hope it helps

we use old newspapers, and old notebooks here. i do cook in charcoal from time to time especially when our gas is gone and i dont have money to buy new one. its cheaper too compared to lpg. we dont use rubber here to start fire on the charcoal because it smells and the food gets it too, and that makes the foods taste a little of rubber smoke.

It also harm us as well, it is no good to absorb that into our body...
When I do that, it is usually for barbeque at home because I don't have a grill so we use brick to make a stove, put charcoal on it, some "burning material" (I don't know the temrs) is usually following with the charcoal so it is easy for people to make the fire. So we just need to light the burning material and fan it for a while, the fire will be okay.

Kerosene and newspaper can make charcoal flaming. I hate the smell of rubber it is very harmful to our health. I hate our neighbor everytime they flaming charcoal they are using rubber slippers. Now that it is raining using charcoal in cooking is a bad idea.

Charcoal has to be dry for one.
And then newspapers all the way....works for us everytime we BBQ.
