should Bi-polar disorder be considered a mental illness?

I do believe it is, but I feel that a lot of people use it as an excuse to be disfunctional and unproductive. I even know a girl that collects a check because her bi-polar is to severe for her to hold a job.

It could be truth, only she knows how she really feels and for a reason her doctor says she can't work. It is funny because I try to get ssi because I have vision problems, I was declared legally blind in one eye and low vision on another but ssi say I could still see big objects. LOL I am ok now and I am managing better my vision, I only see my monitor with my low vision eye and am looking for work, so all is well for me. I have a rare eye condition, I needed a low vision doctor but since my vision is not that common, there nothing that can be done other than to live one day at a time.

I think people with a vision condition should get dibs on ssi before someone with bi-polar. I have bi-polar myself but I still work 60 to 80 hours a week. Not to mention the symptoms are too easy to fake. We could literally have people collecting ssi off our laziness.

I hear with medication bi-polar people can cope, I am not going to cope with medication, I can change how I eat and take vitamins but that's all you know. The other route is to take a gamble and have my eyes tortured. LOL So I can agree with you and you with me but SSI does not agree with either of us.

I doubt ssi agrees with anyone, lol. But I would suggest people take care and research any medication they are prescribed for bipolar . I was given Zoloft as a teen and had some ill effects.
