I am a 45yrs old woman that lives in KY. Some time back I had started going to college to prove a point to my adult cousin. I was trying to get him to go to school to get a new profession and he made at statement that he was too old. I went to college for about a year or so to prove that you can go back to college no matter what the age. But then I just quick. I now have all those credits sitting there and was thinking about going back to finish what I started. My question is this, Am I really too old to try to start a new profession?

You are not too old to go back to study in college. Learning is not stop and everyday as long as we live learning is a continued process. I know a mother who go to college when all her children already finish schools. She even enrolled to study law at the age of 55 and pass the Law board at the age of 60 year old. She finally finish her dream to finish college. At your current age you have a lot of opportunity. Just continue what you started and you will reap what you have been longing for. Do not mind what other people are saying to you. It's your money and you can discover that some people that are much older in you continued to study in college. You may even meet some and make new friends. Good luck to your undertaking. Education is a key to success and your doors to more knowledge and open opportunity for your own growth.

The classroom scene is what I was more concerned about. I was nervous about being the only one my age in any on campus classes that I have to take. I know that I can take online for most of the classes that I need, but there is a couple that has to be on campus. The lady that you mention lets me know that I can do it. Thanks

Hello rosepedal64 this is checkmail and yes earlier was often going to college regularly, later had taken a break from studies due to some other higher education.I created my proffession in computers, the Information Technology, but at that time i was too old to go back to college, as my style and behaviour got a lot of change and its difficult to adjust it with college life.So i prefered to join the University in order to complete my studies.

I have decided to go back to college but I am like you. I have different outlook then most do and of course I am older. So to fix that fear and continue what I started, all my classes are online thru the college that I will be going to. I really like that ideal.

Hi Rose, you have not mentioned what career you have in mind.
If you intend to take up a degree course, in order to fly fighter plane, then you are definitely too old! Even if you want a career in shipbuilding industry or construction industry, I think physically you are not able to meet the challenge.
However, there are other jobs that do not really have age limit. No matter how old you are, accounting, nursing, legal profession are still available. You can even consider teaching after you graduate from college.

That's like asking am I too old to live. Think about what a profession defines. You are there for about 40 hours a week. Eight hours a day, and most people are awake for 16 hours a day. That means half of the time you are awake you are doing said profession. So for me something that defines that big a chunk of my life is worth the time and effort of going back to school. Not only that but I am a BIG believer in always learning always growing. Good luck with whatever you decide.

You are not yet old for something new. You have made the right decision in your life and I am happy for you. Just don't quit. I have a friend who is currently taking up masterals for his engineering career at the age of 56. I am 31 years old now and I am also thinking of going back to college in the next few years to get an Education course for me as I wanted to do teaching when I get older.
Life is a continous education.

No, go ahead and finish school!! I wish I had.
I do find that although I have a lot of office experience, younger people get hired with less experience. So hurry and finish your degree or whatever you're working for and look young! I'm 55 so I look a bit long in the tooth, anyway.
Is that your son in your avatar? It's a great example to any children you have, to see mom going back to school. You can always work it in discreetly that you didn't do college when you were young as they have the chance to, so your life has to be interrupted now.

No, you are never too old to start a new profession. As long as you have the will and the determination to do it then you can persevere. I have seen people older than your age in some of my classes. It gives me motivation as well to let me know that I can get that degree. You go back to school and start a new profession if that is what makes you happy! Don't doubt yourself.

I think that this is quite a valuable discussion. I guess there are a lot of people that worry about whether they are too old to return to study or too old to do anything else. I guess there's a saying that you probably have heard time and time again and that is, you are never too old to do anything, that includes changing career, returning to study or whatever your goal might be. I came out of school with no qualifications whatsoever. Now, I'm 34 years of age, not too old, but I returned to serious study a year ago. I'm trying to get into the IT industry and I took my first course last year which was Computer Maintenance and Installation and I passed this successfully. We started with a class of 16 students and finished up with a class of 4 students! I'm now studying my second course which is Network +, I have passed the first part of this and now I'm studying for the second part which is the MCP or Microsoft Certified Professional! Is this me we're talking about? I cannot believe what I have achieved so far and there's me coming out of school with nothing whatsoever. You can really turn your life around no matter what age you are. I say, if you want something then go for it, follow your heart, no one can stop you but you. Good luck! Just another thing, I have always been negative as person, I've always had a negative view about life. Then, and you probably know this guy, I started listening to Anthony Robbins, that American life coach! Well, his tapes have helped me to remain on an even keel. Anyway, good luck with your goals. Andrew

Andrew, I am so glad to hear that you are doing so well with your studies. To be a negative person and to have succeeded in what you started out to do, is very inspiring me. I have a better outlook on my college dilema. Thanks

I do not feel that anybody is too old to go to college or for a profession. Education as well as profession depends largely on our interest and not on age. There are so many youngsters who fail in college, who waste their time and energy instead of studying well.

You're not. Learning isn't about age! So, go for it, finish what you started and become whatever you want. Some people say, once a person ages, he or she isn't that open to the thought of change anymore... Prove them wrong! Tell through your actions that change is still inevitable even when one is beyond 40's, just embrace your new role and I'm sure you will have great fun with it =)

I like your thoughts. Prove them wrong. I had a negative relative say to me WHY and I didn't how to respond to that. She took me off guard. I expected to hear THATS GREAT. Due to her response is why I posted this discussion. I started to have second thoughts. Thanks
