Am I acting normal?

Yesterday I had to put my 31 year old horse down! He was doing well until yesterday when he just went down hill real quickly! I cried when I witnessed this and cried alittle more after the vet pronounced him dead. Since then I've been in num state of mind! I also feel this really hasn't happen! I maybe should of watched Major being buried in the back pasture of the stable! I haven't cried since and don't plan to go back out to the stable until Monday! Is this normal? I feel I should be feeling pain! Am I in denial? What is wrong with me! I want to know! This can't be normal!

If you're attached to an animal, it's normal to grieve. Just like it's normal to grieve over losing a human. We all grieve differently. Just don't hold anything in, let it all out, and you'll be fine soon. Promise.

31 is a long life for a horse. Mine was 24 when he had to go. He didn't go easy either. His heart was strong but the rest of his body was failing. So much so that the neighbors called animal control so rather than fight I called the vet and the excavator. What pissed me off is that he wasn't suffering but my poor old grandmother who had suffered in pain for 30+ yrs begged to die and wasn't allowed to.

Beleive me when I say, this is absolutely normal...I had my dog pass away infront of my very eyes and I was in a state of shock, similar to the numb feeling that you describe. I couldn't cry too, because I couldn't accept what had just happened..Everything around us does expire someday. This is a sad fact but the realisation helps us to accept things the way they are. Consider this that your horse is now relieved of its suffering and is in a better place, safe from pain. I wish you recover soon and cry aloud, this will help subside the pain in your aching heart.

I think you are in a bit of shock right now. I'm so sorry for the loss of your horse. I love horses and to lose such a beautiful creature has to be heartbreaking. On Monday I believe it will really hit you and the tears will come once again for a longer period of time. Especially when you start remembering the times you had with Major. Again so i'm so sorry.

Aww blue I'm sorry that Major had to go Last fall we lost an old girl at the farm we work at. The owners had gone on vacation for 4 days to go see family in California, we went to feed in the AM and I noticed she was down, I ran and got my husband and we fought all day to get her back up, called the vet, and the vet said she probably wouldn't make it. Old Dolly was 30, I let her rest awhile then we fought and fought again finally I looked at her and said "Dolly not on my watch" I joke you not the very next time we tried she got up, I stayed with her all night and she did great for 3 weeks,.. then when the owner went out to check on her he found her down for good. We've been working there for 3 years now, and I too felt as you, I cried a bit, then went kind of numb, then I couldn't go back to that area of the farm without crying I miss Dolly she was a sweety. It just hasn't hit you yet is all, it's totally normal and truthfully it's probably much better that you didn't see Major being buried because well it's not an easy task. You will grieve when you're ready, truth is it will probably be Monday. Go to where he's buried,.. you need to say goodbye and grieve. My heart goes out to you, and I'll ask old Dolly to show Major around up in horse heaven

After 31 years, you are entitled to feel loss!! My friend, you are perfectly normal!! Any person (man or woman) that tells you that they don't feel a great deal of pain when they lose an animal that they have had any great length of time, is a liar! Let it out and remember the good times. WOW 31 years!! There must be some wonderful stories to tell bout you and your horse! God bless and keep you and enjoy those stories!!
