It was 40 years ago that Neil Armstrong and Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr became the first humans to walk the face of the moon. Michael Collins manned and orbited above in the Apollo 11 spacecraft.
According to NASA
Liftoff was at 9:32 am on July 16, 1969 and at 36 stories high and with 7 1/2 million pounds of thrust . . history was about to be made.
Lunar Landing was at 4:18 pm on July 20, 1969 and that is when Armstrong radioed back to the command station in Houston . ."The Eagle has landed" (The Eagle was the name of the lunar module)
6 hours later at 9:56 pm Armstrong stepped off the Eagle and said those famous words . . .
"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"
15 minutes later Alden joined him on the moon and they spent the next 2 hours collecting soil samples, rocks and photos of the surface. And the American Flagged was raised.
Lunar Liftoff was at 1:54 pm on July 21, 1969
Splashdown was at 12:50 pm on July 24, 1969
for a total duration of 8 days and 3 hours.
It was back on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced before a special joint session of Congress the dramatic and ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade. It is sad for me to remember that is was President Richard Nixon who was in office (he lost the 1960 election to Kennedy) got to be aboard the recovery vessel and was the one to personally welcome the astronauts back to Earth.. (And on another interesting note. . John McCain was a prisoner in the Hanoi Hotel on this day). Upon return to Earth, the astronauts were kept in strict quarantine for three weeks until doctors had ascertained that they had not somehow picked up some sort of deadly pathogen on the lunar surface.
An estimated 600 million people watched the moon landing that historic day . .do you remember where you were?

I was probably in the school library doing my homework or preparing for the next day classes, at that time ,i don't have the luxury of a television at home to watch the moon landing, it is too expensive for my parent to own one even though i live in the richest country on earth.

hey there lamp . .
hope you had a good weekend. . .
we do live in the richest country . . the sad part is how it isnt the country with the best quality of life . .we may have quantity . .but I think i rather see some quality . .
in a way not having the luxury of tv is kinda a good thing....maybe if i didnt my grades in school would have been better! not that they were all that bad but when i look back i know i didnt apply myself half as much as i could have . .
it is so true when i hear that youth is wasted on the young!
happy lotting to you [

There are not to many things I remember watching on our old black and white TV from back then but this was one. We were all parked in the the living room watching. I remember watching the launch. I remember when Armstrong spoke those famous words. I also remember watching them return to earth and then get hustled off to quarantine. Pretty exciting stuff for a seven year old.

Hey Phil!!!
Funny but I too remember watching the capsule hit the Pacific Ocean . .and the feeling of . .cmon when are they gonna get out of that thing already . . it made me think of one of my favorite shows . . I Dream of Jeannie . .and Anthony Nelson who was her astronaut boyfriend . . when that show first came out . it was only in black and white . .
oh the times they are a changin . .
NASA scrubbed the launch of space shuttle Endeavour for the second straight day due to concerns over weather. Do we need another Cold War to get Nasa back on their feet???
always good to see you around my friend

I was 3 years old and I can remember sitting with all my family as we watch our black and white tv. All the smoke is what I remember the most as the rocket took off. I can remember my family like holding their breath as they listened to the tv to hear what was going on. I also remember hearing Armstrong speak those wonderful works. We had a big BBQ in honor of that day. I still have all the National Geographic Mags from Feb to Dec of 1969 that covered the Launch. Thank you for writing this. What a great memory for me.

hey there KikiLove
I bet that black and white TV had bunny ear antennas
I went and looked at Nasa's web site and on it they have a recording of Neil Armstrong . .saying those famous words . . I remember when he first said it 40 years ago and I got the same chills up and down my spine today that I had the first time I heard him say it ..
Thanks for coming by and sharing!
Happy Lotting to you . .and Welcome to the Lot
