Who remembers watching the 1972 Summit Series?

My parents weren't into sports and neither was the rest of the family. They never watched hockey on TV ever. I got bit by the sports bug at school. The 1972 Summit series had shifted to the Soviet Union and we got to watch it at school. Who says Canadians aren't patriotic. There were no classes during those games. The teachers set up televisions so that we could all watch and cheer our countrymen. I got to watch Paul Henderson's game winners hit the back of the net. Nine years old and I became the first sports fan in my family. I haven't been the same since. Where were you when Paul Henderson put the last one away? Do you remember?

What the russians did to prove us wrong was to showcase team play combined with outstanding skating and puckhandling. We were lucky,i'm not saying the best team lost,i'm saying in the end,we wanted more than Russians,we had more heart, more guts. That series could went either way and yes,it changed the game of hockey in North America

The Russians played and still play good hockey. The summit series was good for everybody. We learned a lot from the way they play the game and they learned from us. The Summit Series was a great milestone in sports: Not just in hockey. I was glad to be able to be part of the audience for that great event.
