I was taught to pronounce it "ZED" and my kids too are learning the same way.Why should they teach it to be "ZEE"?Is it because no words goes with zed?If it is so,then what is the fate of h,w and y?They too are not used in the same way they are pronounced.

Hi Neha!
We pronounce 'Z' as ZAD since we learnt the English languauge. Our kids also pronounce it this way. I am surprised to know that now kids are being taught to pronounce as ZEE, I fail to understand the reason for change in pronouncation of this albphabet.

Neha!
Your explanation sounds interesting, it is right, we give the sound of zee, when pronouncing any word beginning form Z. I've taken note ot it.

Being from the UK I pronounce it as ZED. I always thought of Zee being the pronuciation used in America. I haven't heard of the other pronuciations people have referred to in this discussion. But it looks like the pronuciation is a regional thing and varies quite significantly.
Strange that your kids are getting taught a pronuciation different from what you were taught though. Is their teacher local to your region?

Ammudoll
Why do you think ZED is not correct? Just because some MNC told you so? And if that MNC is American, then you should know that Americans do a lot of thing differently from the British and since both are ‘respected superpowers’ the world has accepted both versions equally.
Well, I have always called it ZED and am more comfortable with it. my son has also learned it as ZED and not ZEE

That will depend on what type of English use your country. Since we use British English here in my country, we pronounce it as "ZED". But American English use "ZEE" (correct me if I am wrong)
But don't be bother much. For daily conversation, it won't matter if you use "ZEE" or "ZED". It's your audience understanding that matters.
