What does everyone think about Norton Anti-Virus?? Do you like it?/Dislike?

I feel like it doesn't do much for my computer and now that my subscription has ended, I am bothered everyday to buy the new version. I ignore the daily message even though it urges me that my computer is more likely to be unprotected if it is exposed to new viruses. My computer has been 100% fine since my subscription ended so I feel like I do not need to update my virus protection (for now at least). Please tell me if I'm wrong!

Years ago I used Norton and my computer was hacked and a virus was put in it. I ran Norton and they found nothing! Absolutely nothing So, I stopped using their product and went on to other AV software as well as doing a scan of the computer every so often with an online scanner called TrendMicro Housecall, the same scanning place where I found and deleted the virus years ago http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Norton has to be one of the worst anti-virus systems ever! It slows down your computer soooo much! It does this because it checks, then it checks that its checked properly it then rechecks that one and keeps on continuing making your computer run slower! Although it can find viruses quite well! I have left my Norton with out a subscription and my computer is perfectly fine

Way back in the day, Norton used to be the most efficient and practical antivirus solution. Then they added all sorts of unnecessary stuff and made it hard to remove completely and the PC was very noticeably quicker when you turned it off. It also interfered with the installation of much of the software we, as IT Support, were required to install. Don't kid yourself that, because you have been "100% fine" since your subscription ended, you are therefore protected! A package of protection is absolutely essential these days if you use the Internet and highly advisable if you don't but still exchange files with other people. There are a number of free antivirus solutions. I recommend Grisoft's AVG Free which always performs well in the tests I have seen. I would also recommend Zonealarm's free firewall, which gives you much better protection than Microsoft's built-in one, and would add to the suite SpyBot SD, Adaware and possibly Microsoft Defender. All of these are free though, of course, you will be urged to upgrade to the 'Pro' or paid versions from time to time. This is not necessary. It is essential to keep all of these (especially AVG and Spybot) up to date. AVG have weekly updates and I believe Spybot do monthly updates. Before you install another antivirus solution, make sure that you have completely removed Norton (or any other AV product). It is quite OK to have more than one anti-spyware product or even two firewalls but two AV products will tend to conflict and slow the PC down if they are running at the same time.

I hate Norton. Well they maybe the top anti-virus in the world for long but I dont like their performances. They load slow, update slow and eats lots of resources in my computer.. I prefer eScan or nod32 than Norton..

I fully agree with you that my computer needs protection, but I need to pick different (maybe free) protection software. I heard Search and Destroy worked OK? Thank you for the advice =)

Norton antivirus sucks. Personally i use eset nod32. Its way better than norton. Norton is a system resource hog. I havent used norton in years but i use too. But norton first off it gets expensive. Second it uses way more system resources to run. Oh and yes you do need to update your virus protection whether you continue to use norton or not well thats your choice. I sugguest you do some shopping around though look at other antivirus softwares

I would never leave my computer completely unprotected by having no anti vurus in place. I used to have Norton but was not happy with it so I changed to Webroot which IMO offer so many more protection services than Norton.

I don't like norton anti-virus as well!!So i think it is a program for unsecurity worldwide known!!It is a real strange program because it should protect your pc but it is full of bugs and so you need mso much updates and upgrade to buy and in reality all will result really a big exaggeration in my opinion...probably they just interested to business and not to the customers satisfaction but in reality i had not a positive opinion abou noron and the antiviruses...in many cases your pc still have problems when norton running..really strange...or not much...

As several other people have noted, you really do need some kind of antivirus protection, but there's plenty of free programs out there that do an adequate job. Left to myself, I'd use Avast or AVG, but unfortunately, my laptop came with Norton pre-installed, and nothing else seems to be able to even complete a virus scan, so I'm stuck with it. I like my computer to not freeze completely, thank you very much.

I hate it! It's horrible! It's one of the absolute worst in my experience. You should get some sort of protection though. And though it may seem that your computer is fine, there could be infections that you just can't notice yet.

I use the Norton Anti-virus product myself and I'm pretty happy with it. I scan my system regularly on a Friday evening. The thing I like about Norton is they have the registry cleaner in built. Whenever I scan my system the registry is automatically checked for any invalid entries. It's absolutely essential that you keep you antivirus updated as new viruses are being created all the time. You may not have a virus now but there's a one hundred per cent certaintly that you will if you don't renew or keep your product updated. If you don't want to go for the paid version then you can always temporarily use the free version of AVG, I used this product myself for a while. Anyway, whatever you decide to do, good luck. Andrew

Norton is great when it comes to removing and preventing you're computer from viruses. But it has a disadvantage, it consumes a lot of memory which slows down you're computer. Try other alternatives by using free anti-virus.. There are many free anti-virus out there, and can be updated without any payment to be made..^_^

I personally dont like norton anti-virus and always install avg7 the free edition, even if its an old version. I also recommend avg anti virus to my friends/and at our office. I dont like Norton because its so slow and scans every files on each folder that I I open and I think it always gets in the way when I work because it uses a great amount of cpu process/memory. the program is beautiful but it loads a lot of pictures/images that the program uses for buttons, sound, background, etc.

I am norton lover. Norton do so much that you can't find any virus alert on your screen frequently. I am using norton from last 5 years. I have tried Norton, Mcafee, AVG, Avast, Zone alarm, trend micro, quick heal. but I found Norton and Quick Heal are the most powerful antivirus.

Well I personally think that norton antivirus is just not the antivirus to go for. It makes the computer slow and also due to personal experiences, it does not remove all the viruses. Personally i like McAfee antivirus and also Kaspersky antivirus. It does not slow down the computer and it also removes all the viruses. as much as i know.

I have had Norton on my computer for some years now, currently using Norton Internet Security 2009. It has kept my computer virus free since I began. I did recently experience one issue when I turned it on to run a manual scan and it said that I was not protected. I immediately contacted customer support and the service technician did a remote help and was able to correct the problem. This is the only incident in several years of using the product. Each product probably has something people like and dislike. My former place of employment ran McAfee for years and got a virus. They installed Norton and it found things McAfee did not. The important thing is to keep your computer covered and update AntiVirus software regularly.

Lots of good advice in discussions of this type. Most important is to get an anti-virus program running that can will update. new viruses are released everyday so by leaving your Norton as is without being able to update will expose you to trouble. There is plenty of free programs that you can use that are almost as good and sometimes is better than the paid ones. AVG and Avast are two common ones. You can do a search and compare the different ones to see the pros and cons of each one. I used Norton in the past and always had troubles with it. There's be the issue of slowing my PC down and conflicts with other applications. You also better take in to consideration: firewalls, malware, spyware, adware, worms, fakeware, rootkits and trojans. MS Windows is a haven for hackers and the nasty little habits they have of trying to steal our info and wreak our computers.

I'd I used Norton disk repiring software a lot. But to Norton Anti-virus. Not much recently, partly because it seems hardware consuming. And besides Norton, still a lot to choose. On the top of Anti-virus software, I think you also need a software to keep all the patches can be reached in time.
