Have you ever seen or heard a parrot cage kept open with a parrot inside? Well some years back we had a neighbour who had this pet parrot kept in an open cage. It seems he had found this little bird lying injured in his garden some time back. He looked after it very lovingly and kept it in a cage to protect it from other big ones. After it grew big, he used to keep the cage open, to allow it to fly away to freedom. It did fly away but to the surprise of every one it returned at dusk to its cage to rest for the night. This became a daily habit for it. He used to take special care of it very lovingly. He used to keep water in a small cup along with some green chillies and guavas for it. It flys away in the morning and returns in the evening to its open cage.It was a sight of amusement for the entire neighbourhood. After some months, this man got transferred to some other city, but his family used to look after the bird equally well, but after a few days of his going, the parrot also flew away to God alone knows where. It never came back. Every one in the neighbourhood felt very bad. The sight of the empty cage brought water in the onlookers eyes. The cage was still there but empty. When this man was told this story, he fell sick and got hospitalised for a week. He got his job tranferred back and came back to stay with his family. After a few weeks, the parrot returned one evening to its cage, its loving home, its loving master. If you love somebody free it, if it is yours it will come back, if not, it was never yours. Have you ever heard or seen any thing like this.?

What a wonderful story! I work with a lady that had a peacock show up in her back yard one day. (This is very odd for Alabama, USA.) She started feeding him and he stayed in her back yard for about 2 years. At night he would roost in a low branch of one of her trees. He would come up to her when she was outside and take food from her hands. He remained there as her fiend until the day he passed on.

Thats such a lovely story, so thanks for sharing it:) I love birds and parrots are beautiful animals. So bright and colourful. You can buy open top parrot cages in this country but you couldn't let a parrot fly off here. It is not a native bird, and it gets too cold here in the winter so a parrot outside without any form of heating would probably not survive. They are also considered quite valuable as pets so they might get stolen. I do not have a parrot myself, but I think most people who keep parrots in the UK let them play outside of their cage in their home and some make special heated flight enclosures and rooms for their parrots. I agree that an animal should be entitled to freedom, and their is nothing more beautiful than receiving the companionship of an animal that chooses to live with you. So it is lovely that this parrot had that freedom:) I think one of the few birds you can keep here that you can let fly away are pigeons. These are homers so come back to their owners to roost and feed.

Wow, that is a very powerful story. I do not think that I have ever heard of this before. I think that it is lovely that the parrot came back when the man came back to the town. It made me think that before, maybe the parrot had gone to the man, or atleast gone to look for him. Very beautiful words at the end, I've heard that quoted before myself. I appreciate this discussion.
