Do you bite fingernails when you are bored or stressed?

I just finished reading Nick Leeson's Rogue Trader. He mentioned that he had a habit of biting his fingernails when he was stressed.
I remember when I was studying for my diploma, there was a very outstanding lecturer. His teaching method was very lively, and he was very humorous. He loved to initiate discussions, and engaged all of us in the discussions. The most irritating part was that he bit his fingernails when he was not talking. It was so gross to look at him, and saw him biting the fingernails.
Do you bite fingernails when you are bored or stressed? Do you have any outward show of stress, such as fidgeting?

I have not bitten my fingernails in over 30 years!
I am glad you are online at this time; I just read the FAQ at reviewstream and they have a referral program. Go to the site and get your link and send it to me so yu can get the credit.
Also, do the reviews have to be 250 words?

Hi Canellita, thanks for waiting for the referral link.
Since getting referrals only get a miserable 1%, hope you can write more, and every review makes $2!
I wrote a few reviews today, one about the laundry detergent. I kept on talking about the low price, about half the price of regular brand! I talk about prices in most of my reviews! Guess I'm too good in Maths.

Nail biters! I have to share my thoughts with you on this subject. Not only do nail biters look awlful while they do this, they also are not aware that they do. It is a habit. The nails is the most dirty part of your body. Think about it. When you pick up things, the blount of the dirt accumalates under the nail. Then the biters put that into their mouth. Good way to catch the Swine Flu. Keep them fingers out the mouth.

I have been reading about what people said like your comment and I think that will help alot of people stop. Many people I know just stopped because they wanted longer nails or it was too annoying and everyone said stop, oh stop!

One of these days, I will take the digital camera and "shoot" all those nail biters. Let them see how awful that is!
But then, I will lose my appetite! Just can't bear to see anyone biting the nails, and making those awful sounds.
I think they really need to learn from the cats and the dogs! At least cats and dogs dont bite their nails to keep them short!

That's nasty and unhygienic... Anyone with that bad habit should brush their nails with an anti nail biting/thumb sucking liquid. It dries to a clear enamel finish, but gives off a bitter taste on biting... should work even with the grown up babies... LoL... ^_^

Hi Ice, there is a great idea. At least let the nail biters aware that they are biting the nails again.
Most of them bite their nails unconsciously. I just hope the taste is more awful. Instead of just bitter, the manufacturer can make it bitter, sour and extremely spicy hot, to make those nail biters cry.

Only if one of my nails is too long. I don't chew them to the bone but if I am bored stuck in a meeting or waiting at the doctor's office or something and one of my nails is too long I will likely chew it until it is down to where I like my nails to be.

Oh my goodness, both of you really should bring a nail clipper along.
I can't imagine both of you sitting in the board meeting and biting nails. Your boss must be very frustrated!
Do you chew the toe nails too? I hope not! Chewing the fingernails is really gross, can't imagine chewing toe nails to keep them short.

Hi,NO i do not have the habit of biting my fingernails at all however bored or stressed I am. It is really a very bad habit and spoils our image in public, you may be dressed well, having a good communication power, able to execute duties assigned to you smartly, but once someone spots you biting your nails it makes him feel how childish or funny you are. So it is not good to bite your nails instead control yourself at such times. Moreover our nails look so abnormal and weak and we cannot work freely with our hands even while shaking hands with someone as most people have the habit of biting only their right hand fingers

Never really thought about it like that. I have seen peoples nails that are so short that it looks like it would hurt. I think we all have something we do when we are stressed and it is not as common.
Happy LOtting!

Hi Swilliams, I'm glad you have kicked off the disgusting habit of biting fingernails. Those who bite fingernails may not feel it, but the onlookers are disgusted.
I am fortunate not to have any outward show of stress. It takes a long time for me to keep still, and stops all the stupid gestures to show how stress I am. Once I got into the habit of using a pen to hit the table. Or use a coin to hit the metal in the bus stop while waiting for bus. The sound was very irritating to anyone who hear it. I managed to kick off both habits.

Thankfully it is an habit I never had. But I do know of lots of people that tend to bite their nails for various reasons.
I know a few people that bite their nails regularly and others that only do so when they're really stressed. It seems to be difficult to stop once one gets used to do it.

Hi Arkaf, I do not realize that biting fingernails is such a common habit. So far, I have only met one, which was my lecturer. The only other case I read about was Nick Leeson in a book. I had heard people biting fingernails once in the train.
Other than that, only kids will want to bite fingernails. I think parents and teachers should help the kids kick off this disgusting habit, otherwise they will bite nails when they are older.

I do not think it is that gross to look at people bite their fingernails but that's just me, I imagine it was a habit your teacher could not break, it does not look that great and maybe he started to do it unconsciously as well. My worse habit is that I like to play with my bra straps, and I do know when to stop myself tho, besides it is not like I would be in front of a classroom

See, it could be worse, he could be picking his nose and then biting his nails LOL
But seriously, since he is aware he could try to be busy while he is in the classroom, he is a great teacher so maybe it is time for him to write his memoirs that way he using his hands for good and not evil

haha ShellyB, I think you have a really strong stomach, most of us find it gross to watch anyone bite fingernails. The next horribly gross habit is picking nose oh!
I think my lecturer really wanted to kick off the nail biting habit, but he couldn't help it. He did mention that we must remind him, so that he could stop biting the nails.
I think your habit of playing with bra straps is very funny.

I didn't even know that it's such a common problem.
When I was very young, I used to suck thumb, and bit fingernails when I was doing those Maths work. Of course my mother scolded.
In those days, she's very fierce, would cane us if we never listened to her. Fortunately the nail biting habit never has a chance to develop

I can't remember the last time I bit my fingernails. I find the habit gross. The fingernails accumulate dirt. It's dirty to chew them. But I can't comment if it's other people's habit. It's their fingernails and it's their own mouth that they put the fingers in. I can't say anything about it.

Hi Prinzcy, I agree the habit of nail biting is very gross.
Somehow those people who resort to nail biting do so unconsciously. It is when they do so in public, then onlookers will feel gross. The sound is irritating enough. My lecturer did that, when we were talking to him, that's what make it so gross, since we couldn't just talk to him, without looking at him.

Hi happy6162, when I was young, I loved to bite fingernails too, not because I was bored or stressed. I loved to play, and treat nail biting as a game. That time I was too young to understand about bacteria or virus.
My mother gave me a good spanking, and that ended the game of biting fingernails. Fortunately we did not bring the bad habit of nail biting from childhood to adult.

Hi Edmltw, I wonder how you pass the examination in the first place! How come the teachers never kick you out of the examination hall for singing so loudly?
I think your boss and colleagues must be thinking of sending you into mental institute when they see you sing lots of songs.
I bet it's fun to sing, provided not in the middle of the night!

Oh my goodness yes! I hate biting my fingernails, but when im stressed or nervous, i don't even realize im doing it! I also tend to shake my legs or my feet. My husband gets really annoyed with it because we'll be sitting waiting to do something, and ill just start shaking my legs really fast, and it makes that noise when your feet touch the floor, and he thinks its so annoying. I also sometimes pull out small strands of hair. I dont know why i do it! I wish i didnt, but i cant help it! I dont even realize im doing it most of the time.

haha Emmasmomma, I wonder why your husband never vomit the food out when he sees you biting your fingernails.
You may not feel how disgusting the habit of biting nails is, but your husband will surely feel disgusted.
I used to have some annoying habits too, almost as irritating as your shaking legs. I used to take a pen and hit on the table repeatedly. I didn't even realize how noisy that was, until my colleagues asked me to shut up.
At the bus stop, while waiting for bus, I would use a coin and hit the metal bar in the bus stop. From the annoying looks, I guess the rest of the people are nearing explosion stage.
Thankfully I kick off all the bad habits. Maybe due to my professional as a HR staff, I have learnt to sit still, and observe, rather than show others how nervous or stressful I feel.

Hi there!
When I am stressed, I do not bite my fingernails. It does not seem a healthy practice to me and I feel instead of helping this may cause further damage to our health. Dust particles which are invisible, keep gathering at our nails and if we chew our nails, we swallow dust unknowingly, which may cause ill effect to our health.

Hi Dpk, actually nail biting is a very bad habit, and some of them nail biters do not really wash their hands or check that they do not have any dirt under the nails before they start to bite the nails.
I think most of them do so unconsciously, and more so when they are stressed. I'm glad I never have this bad habit in the first place.

She's done it as far back as my childhood and probably before that. She does it when she's worried or stressed. She has managed to quit now and then and she grows lovely nails but then she'll start again and they just look chewed up. I guess we all have our own little habits when we're worried or stressed...I scratch my head when I'm worried...sometimes I think I'm going to scratch right through to my brain LOL

If she's still biting nails at this age, she will never kick the habit off. Sounds very gross.

I can identify with the lecturer you're talking about. I'm a married professional who bites his fingernails all the time everywhere-at least whenever the urge overtakes me. I also bit my toenails until I lost the flexibility to do it. Otherwise, I'm a normal, outgoing, somewhat athletic guy whom most people like. It's just one of those mildly annoying quirks I'm resigned to live with.

Man, you're making too much noise about nail-biting. It's a very mainstream habit. It's estimated 10% of adult males worldwide are compulsive nail-biters. Your former university lecturer and I fall into that subgroup. There are many very respectable people who seriously bite their nails, including UK PM Gordon Brown, actor James McAvoy, singer Robbie Williams, tennis star Andy Roddick, Brittany Spears, and a lot more. Check them out. Serious nail-biters don't worry about getting germs and worms, which are everywhere to invade us whether or not we bite our nails.

hello scheng!!!
haha...I am afraid, but yes I bite my finger nails. I may not notice I may be doing that hehe...And still I have that habit. Specially when I have to think, my mouth involuntarily goes to bite finger nails and I don't realize it at all haha...That's I rarely use the nail cutters for my hand lol...Now with this discussion, I have started feeling humor upon myself haha, what a kind behavior I have. And I don't know, I may be sometimes biting nail even at the class room when the teacher may be teaching. Till today no one pointed out. May be because here are many students who sometimes keep on biting the nails, and the teacher are already used to seeing those things haha...I will be cautious not to do it from next time.
happy mylotting...

When I was young, I enjoyed biting nails, just for the fun of it, then my mother discovered, and gave me a good spanking. That's why I never have a chance to develop this disgusting habit.
Maybe I should ask your brother and cousin to tell your mother to spank you for biting nails.

Hi Sheng. My mom said when I was a very young child I bit my fingernails, but she put some pretty polish on them and said if I bit my nails it would not stay, so I quit and have never done it since then. When I am bored, I figet or pace some. And if stressed, I catch myself "sighing" a lot, or also pacing.

Hi PeacefulWmn, your mother is a kinder lady than my mother.
When I was young, I bit the nails for fun. Very fun to watch the nails getting shorter and shorter as I kept biting. My mother gave me a good spanking. That effectively ended the nail biting even before it became a habit.
Sighing and pacing are quite common way of dealing with stress. I used to tap my pen on the table when I was bored or stress. I did that quite unconsciously and never even noticed how irritating for my colleagues.

Hi Sheng. Well I guess a spanking is one way to go about it! Ack! I hated those when I was a child. And yes, pencil tapping denotes stress or boredom, as does jingling the change in one's pocket, etc. We do not notice when we do these things, but it can definitely annoy those around us!
