Have you heard the latest that Obama and his crew want to make it so that the soldiers that are putting their lives on the line for us each day over seas, are not allowed to smoke. You know they face many things every day that could take their lives, not to mention being away from home and family to fight for our freedom. I am sure this would put an added stress on their lives. What is it with the government that they think they should be in our lives 24/7 taking away an pleasure we think we have. When you pick up that gun to go and fight for this country, who is it that should tell you, you can't smoke a cigarette. What is your take on this, do you think the government or military has the right to tell you yes get that gun and go fight for your country, but don't put your life in harms way by lighting that cigarette.

Did you get your facts straight? Pentagon health experts want your Defense Secretary to ban yours troops from smoking. A study conducted by the Institute of Medicine, on behalf of the Pentagon and VA, discovered that it costs the Pentagon $846 million in medical costs and lost productivity a year, whilst the VA foots $6 billion in smoking related illnesses. Read about it here: http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2009-07-09-smoking_N.htm

Well it seems to me that if they can risk their lives in Iraq and anywhere else, that it should be a matter of choice whether they smoke or not, it is their lives they are putting on the line. Wonder if that smoking or not would of saved the lives of the ones that has already been killed over there. Seems ot me if that is all they ask for them they should be giving it to them. Let the ones that make all these studies go put their life on the line for our freedom. I am personally sick and tired of hearing about whether I smoke or not, it really isn't any one's business but mine. I don't get in people's faces with it. Why don't they try attacking the ones on the road drunk for a change and leave the smokers and the one's fighting for your freedom alone.
government and people that don't smoke got their noses stuck too far up the American people's behind time to pull it out and stay out of others business you want to complain do it against he one that killed the little kid here over the weekend, drunk, no one cares about that.

Look, if you take out life insurance and you ticked the box stating that you're a smoker, your insurance premium will end up around double that of a non-smoker... The reason being that the insurance company sees smokers as a higher liability.
Whilst on active duty, the Pentagon pays for your soldiers' healthcare and the VA pays for the healthcare of veterans. The problem is that both the Pentagon and the VA have a limited budget to spend on servicemen healthcare and they see a potential saving by not having smoking related health issues to deal with.
Remember though that this is what the Pentagon is suggesting and not something your government has approved. Even if it's approved, they're not going to ban smoking over-night, it's suggested to be phased-in over a 20 years period.

When I heard about this, bdygas, I said the same thing to my daughrter! I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the government is into our personal lives way too much! Where is it all going to end? In my opinion, if they were taking care of the business of running this country the way it should be run they would not have all of this time to worry about our personal habits. This is really too much! Personally, I've never understood how it is that our young people are expected to go off and fight in wars, but our government reserves the right to tell them that they can't even drink if they want to.

It's ridiculous. I'm appalled. I don't smoke, I'd rather people not smoke, but since when is it the government's job to be a dictator? And for them to ban the people in the military? Do they really want soldiers going through withdrawal while fighting battles? I think it is pathetic, and I'm hoping enough people make a fuss that prevents this from taking effect. Once again, I'm not for smoking, but it's no business of the government to control that choice.
