Empty titles that are not empty Grrrrrr!

Now that I have three writing stars I am excited to be able to earn more in helium upfront payments in addition to the empty title bonuses. Recently I have been using empty titles to help maintain my writing score and I check my stats often to watch which articles perform best and choose titles on similar subjects for new articles.
I have even figured out how to use the title finder to locate old titles that are still in need of articles. In the last few days though I have been choosing articles listed as having zero articles and then finding out that the titles were not empty at all!!!!!
If there is only one article for a title and I post mine it will not be considered competitive. My strategy for maintaining my great writing score is quickly becoming less useful.
The good news is I reached the halfway mark to 100 articles, my lext goal on the road to reaching 300+

Hi Canellita, why dont you go to the category directly? At least the empty titles post there are really empty titles.
If you really want to focus on a particular sub-category, you can even subscribe to the RSS. In that case, you get the notification whenever a title is added. The title finder is really useless when comes to empty title hunting.

Some of the articles under the categories aren't empty either, and it seems to take twenty four hours to update on occasion. If you just look at the list the you can be fooled, as I have, and write even though someone else has written there first. To be sure you have to go into each link to see if another article opens, or whether the write now window opens.

Yep - you still need to be quick though lost one new title because someone beat me to submitting as the acknowledgment of the new article came when I was at work.

In that case searching for empty title will take even longer time than writing article. It is a waste of time to hunt for empty title that does not turn out to be empty at all.
The best is to suggest title, and wait for approval. In this case, it is almost a guarantee that the title will be empty when I write to it.

Hi Canellita...congrats on the half-way mark to 100. And yes, since I began writing to "empty titles" my own numbers of articles in the competetive section dropped from 93% to in the 70s. I will no longer follow that strategy. Sometimes our own understaning and instincts are best after all. Twice now I've followed what I thought might be good advice only to have it backfire.

Does this mean your writing score is continuing to climb?
I was going to have to start posting articles to competitive titles soon anyway. My competitive percentage is in the upper 20s and we have to maintain at least 25.

That is not a bad thing. Your writing score is more important. You only have to worry if your percentage of competitive titles drops lower than 25%. Take a look at the help pages on helium for an explanation of ratings, percentages and why you want to write to empty titles.
The whole point of having writing stars is so you can earn the upfront payments and empty titles bonuses and make more money.

My writing score went up 2 points, but...my percentage of articles in competitive titles dropped from 93% to 79% when I began writing to empty titles.

Hi Canellita!
It is great to know that you are an author on Helium. May please send me the links of your article(s), if possible. Keep writing and Keep enjoying. Helium has disallowed many of us from posting articles, as we belong to different countries. I sometimes write on Associated Contents.

There is a link to my helium articles in my myLot profile and in my helium profile there are links to other writing.

As a writer I find no comparison between the two sites. MyLot does not offer the opportunity to earn passive income perpetually from your discussion posts.
I see MyLot as a place to socialize and network and it has been very helpful to me in that regard, particularly for networking with other writers.
What have you written about at helium?

I can understand now why you haven't spent much time at helium since you can't earn as much for your efforts in the creative writing channel.

I am thinking that the keywords you are using are different from what others have used, though I would assume it'd then be under a whole new title thread. I'd contact helium to make sure they know of this or can help you figure this out. If the search engine isn't bringing back what it should there will be a lot more unhappy strategising helium writers!

It sounds like their search system is flawed and competitive in and of itself. Also, on the same note it's misguiding if titles are popping up that aren't empty titles. I can see they want more traffic to competitive titles, but at the same time those who want to have the advantage and benefit of empty titles, should still be able to gain that glory without the disappointment of finding competitive titles instead of empty.
I hope I understood you correctly.

Yesterday when I put in my keyword I apparently forgot to ask for results with only empty titles. I discovered that when sorted you could see how many articles existed for each and that unless you sorted to only show the empties the numbers were more accurate.
This is probably a good way to sort since titles that only have two articles are not considered competitive and the writers who have already contributed articles might appreciate the titles being made competitive.
Writing to competitive titles is only good for your score if you are always at the top for each title. If you are still developing your cache of articles the way I am it is better to have a low percentage that are competitve and look for empty titles to write to.
People with more articles will have to spend time leapfrogging to get their articles back up to the top.

Helium has a reputation for trying good ideas, but they are not too sharp at getting it right without several tries. Many of the these later features have bugs. I have actually hit a few in the empty titles with 5 or more articles. I think some of the problem is coming from the title splitting that is going on now. They post new titles and then before anyone can write to them, they fill them with extra articles from a similar title that has too many articles.

It was my understanding that the title splitting was only taking place in the business channel. Interestingly enough I saw there was something in the most recent helium email about them having resolved the empty title issue.
My issue today is not being able to post while updates are taking place :-(

I have seen the same kind of thing. Using the title finder it always seems that there is one more article than is listed, and when looking for empty titles within the subjects they appear to be only updated every twenty four hours.
Don't let it worry me too much although as I have already written my article and so whilst it is worth $1 less than it was it is still worth some money. As I am still on 40% competitive I don't worry too much about the competitiveness either, will start to worry when it gets down to about 25%.

What is interesting to me is that when you don't request results with only empty titles and then you sort the results you can the true number of articles for each title.

Helium functionally is a Database. If you are searching so are others. What you see today may not be updated, that is someone could have found the same title and written an article to it today and it would not show up in the search engine until tomorrow.
The thing to know though is there must be three articles in a title for it to be considered competitive. So it isn't a bad thing if there is already an article there, this will in fact help since it is more likely to attract additional writers if the next article will make the entire title competitive.
The empty title issue is one that all the Stewards are currently dealing with by the way. There are hundreds of them across the site and many that will be showing up in contests soon I suspect. If you are writing primarily in one or two channels you might want to reach out to the Channel Steward who can assist you with finding titles also. The Stewards have access to additional tools and can search the channels for "competitive" titles very easily.

Hmmm, I never use the title finder at all since I tend to write to only certain channels and recently have some easier tools to use as well. I suspect the problem is an updating problem but it is one that should be brought up to our admin staff, I will do so if you like.

Thanks. I recently received an email that a fix had been devised not long after I had the problem and then came the 0/0 thing but I figure a bunch of professional complainers will have already beat me to it so I don't worry about reporting the few little issues I encounter, especially when I find out others have had the same problem and solutions are being discussed.
When I use the title finder now I look to see what titles there are that are related to the keyword I enter and then how many articles are in each since we have to post to competitive titles from time to time any way.
After the month of frustration I spent figuring out helium and then finally getting stars and starting to earn I guess I got a little carried away with the empty titles, LOL.

If you look at the rest of this discussion those of us regularly on the hunt for empty titles usually check first to be sure the titles are in fact empty. Once someone actually beat me to posting to an empty title but I am usually looking at titles that have been active for several months or longer that no one else is interested in.
I encountered the empty titles not empty phenonmenon when I started using the title finder.

I have had the same issue. The only thing I can think of is that the title finder is not keeping up with the speed articles are being submitted. The lag between articles being submitted and the title finder realizing they are not empty anymore is causing the title finder to show titles as empty that are not. I totally agree, it is very annoying.

This is not the only section that doesn't update right away. When you post new articles the my helium page doesn't give you updated totals and a few days ago it showed I had articles in CW that I didn't. I went to my profile page and the numbers were accurate.
