I never remember being bored as a child. I would climb a tree, build a fort, play in the water hose, make mud pies, play with my dog, read a book, toss a ball, hide and seek, tag, jump rope, color a picture, handstands and cartwheels, ride my bike, and countless other activities. And yet, my children have Nintendo DS and Wii and DVD Players countless movies, 101 toys in there rooms, just as many outside toys, but still they are bored. I must have heard them say it at least 10 times in the last hour. I tell them go outside, play, run, explore, get a little dirty for crying out loud. Their response??? "That's no fun Mom" What can I do to get my family back to the basics of life??? I am more than willing to spend the time with them. I just need some good ideas to get them excited. Any suggestions???

So many children today do not know how to play, they are so entertained by video games and televisions that they forget how to play without it. My children are outside from almost the minute they wake up, I have to make them come inside. And they watch very little television, they have no video games. They play with and with out toys.

i have noticed this with my kids too. they just dont know how to entertain themselves anymore. my younger daughter is not too bad because she will pick up a book or do some drawing but my older daughter has no idea what to do with herself.
i am an only child and had to entertain myself most of the time, but these days, kids just dont know how to do that.
what about the library?

Today's society has brain washed our children into believing that they need electronics and or adult attention at all times. The best thing to do is turn off the TV and video games and leave them to figure it out on their own. Give them some simple toys and dress up stuff and let them go for it. They may complain at first but soon enough they will figure it out.
If time with them is what you are looking for try starting a hobby with each. Get some books on different birds or fauna and let them search and make journal about what they found. Craft with them. Nothing gets the juices flowing like a ball of yarn and some way of making it in to something. Plus making and finishing something give them a real sense of accomplishment that goes a long way in a bunch of different ways.
My own have a thing for eating contests. We did it at a birthday party we through and now they (and the other kids) are always doing it...go figure.
