How do you get traffic

I was wondering what some people have came up with to get traffic to their site or any kind of page they have.
I know there is always the basics , for example. Posting on forums , telling friends , paid advertising. What else have you done to promote your site?

If you've made the site yourself - which I advise most people to do because not only does it look a lot more professional it also allows you to make the site exactly how you need it to be then you can add in meta tag keywords so therefore when someone searches for it on a search engine if you have the keywords you're more likely to pop up which can help bring in traffic. This is one thing I don't hear a ton of people talking about but I've made websites for employers before and I know that punch line always helps get them to decide to allow me to do the site and not another company.

Submit your blog, website or articles to directory's and make sure they cross link.
Get your link on other blogs and websites by offering to link exchange with them.
Post comments on blogs and other places giving feedback and promoting your own links.
