The other day I read The Godfather.Once I finished it,I was able to appreciate the audacity and the greatness in the book.I was able to understand its classic status.Truly a masterpiece. But one notable minus point I could put forward was its crude language. For us adults its nothing but a part of the book. But imagine if a small kid reads the book. Books like these can have similar impact on minds like an 18+ movie. The language in these books can be diluted and still retain the popularity. What do you say?.

I think you answered your own question. The book is for adults, not children. They shouldn't be reading it, and it's up to parents to monitor their own children. It isn't everyone else's responsibility to create a sanitary world for kids. Writing is art; it should be freely expressed, in my opinion, and this is coming from a Christian. There is much in our world that I detest, but I support freedom of speech and expression, even if I disagree with it

First, thanks for your opinion.I agree with you that moralizing is not a responsibility. But,is it necessary to add those "aspects" to the book where it is not required barring freedom of speech?

I think if distasteful and repulsive language is used just for publicity for a book then I think it is not justified. Some authors use it just to make their writer edgier. However, if one is a really good writer, there is no need to use such words. But if the language is needed to tell the story like in The Godfather, for me it is justified because in reality Mafia families do use such languages. Basically, It really depends on the author's intentions. :)

it really depends, like you said most adults can understand that the bad words are only part of the book. so it's best to not let our kids read them or guide them when they are reading these kind of books (or watch movies with foul language). but then i guess for writers and editors, i think that they should be more careful.
