Should Kidnappings by Terrorists be Reported?

I heard on the radio recently that after a journalist was abducted by alleged radicals in the Middle East, the News station or Newspaper (I don't remember which one) that the journalist reported to contacted some 40 news agencies to keep quiet about the abduction. They even contacted Wikipedia when someone updated the bio of the journalist and said that he was recently abducted. In light of both the freedom of speech and the goal of protecting American citizens abroad, do you thing kidnappings of this kind should be widely publicized?
