My cat attacks kitten

I love my cats dearly and it breaks my heart that the mother cat will not allow her kitten to come near her. I researched it online and most websites said that it was normal. That mother cats want their kittens to be independent so they act that way. It is so bad that I actually have to make sure I put their food bowls like ten feet apart. Today I was sitting on the porch by the steps and the kitten took for ever to come up the stairs because she was wondering how she could do it and avoid her mother at the same time. Does anyone know how to fix this problem or at least make it a little better?
