Do you volunteer your time? Your services? Your knowledge?
Do you donate your blood? Your money? Your clothing?
In these tough economic times, more and more people can use a helping hand. Unfortunately, that's also the time that people that usually give don't have anything extra to do so. Food pantries run out of food. Soup kitchens may not get enough donations to keep the pots filled. People can't afford the gas to go that 'extra mile'.
I'd like to write an article on how the current economy has affected the way we give of ourselves, our time and our possessions. Please tell me how you've volunteered and/or donated in the past and whether you're still able to do those things today and why/why not. I hope to get enough interesting answers to put an article together in the next few days. I won't use anything from your response without your permission and even with that, you will be identified by first name only.

I don't know that the current economic situation has had an effect on what I'm giving or doing, but I can see that it's having an affect on others.
This is my 2nd year doing the 3-Day Walk to benefit Susan G Komen for the Cure and I am pretty far behind in my fundraising. Last year people would donate just from my e-mails that I send out. This year, not so much... Although I do think part of it is that people donated last year so they don't think they should have to donate again this year. I am doing more raffles and things to raise money.

Oh shoot, I also meant to say that sometimes it seems like those who don't have give more while those who have keep it.

Hi, Ldyjarhead! It is an interesting topic. I remember when I was a volunteer parateahcer in a summer kindergarten program. I volunteered for four consecutive years. I was a college student then. I was thinking of how I can contribute to my town and to my fellow brethren even in a small way. There was a religious organization that offers a kindergarten every summer for free. I thought it is already my chance so I took it. After every program, I felt a sense of devotion and conviction of volunteering.

When I was in College most of the time I volunteer myself to give service to others for free. We go for coastal clean-up in different rivers in our place. We also go for love drive we give foods and clothes in the province or people living in the mountains area. Then when every time there is activity in our school I also volunteer myself to help preparing for the said activity. There was one time in the year 2007 when one of the place in our city had a fire. Many families lost their homes and some of them were my classmates and friends. Well, our school offer helped from the families who lost their homes. They stayed in our school for a month since that was summer break. Me and my family also offered some help to those people. We bought some canned foods, rice, noodles, milk and coffee for them. We also donate our old clothes to them. Actually, it was really funny because I went to school with so many bags. My friends were laughing at me because it seems I brought all my clothes at home. Well, I really love helping other people. It is my honor to help and share something from them. I'm not saying that I'm kind because I know that I'm not. Helping others makes me happy for as long as I saw them happy also.

I donated money and clothing. And I also planned to be a volunteer at local museum...but the problem is that I'm too lazy and really want to stay at home at weekends instead of going anywhere...anyway, donation is a good way to make me feel myself helpful. Anything we donate, for instance, meoney, clothing, food or time, can do help some others, and this is really a good thing! Human beings are social animals and we need each other.

Hiya Ldyjarhead..I still donate any clothes we no longer use but I also go the extra mile and look for bags of clothes that people throw out and then sort through them for the decent clothes and donate those as well. It's amazing the amount of clothes, some new with tags still on them, that people just toss in the garbage cause they don't want the bother of donating them to people who can't afford it. I've also volunteered my time if I can. I also grow extra fruit/veggies to help out the local food pantry.

It is very hard to give financially as we used to. We always had spare money in my purse and my husband's wallet to give when we were at church and heard of a need we would have the spare money to give to that need. We would buy different items for our children's ministry and now we have to pinch our pennies so close that we have had to cut back on our giving so much to special needs of our church members and community and to our children's ministry. I didnt' tell you much but did offer what we are having to do hope it helps in some way. God bless you, Ldyjarhead!

Time goes to Cats about Town Society, a no kill cat rescue.
We donate clothing and other items that we either can't sell or just don't have the time and inclination to bother.
Money donations go to various different things that we think are worthy.

I belonged (past tense as of the end of june) to the local kinette club - we ran the things like skatathon (raises money for telemiracle) hobby fair, seniors supper, the carol festival and a few other things locally ona volunteer basis. We folded this spring because we went from having 15 memebers 6 years ago to having 4 members this coming fall. We also ran out of "income" to donate money and such to things.
So in the coming year i hope to find some other group to join - or join the kinette club in the next town over so i can continue to volunteer.
I tend to donate money and time as well to the relay for life, money to various things that friends are particiapting in like marathons and other fund raisers. I have donated to the food bank in the past but not in recent times - right now knowing how much financial difficulty certain family and friends are in i'm more likely to grab some spare groceries and leave them at their houses (generally snuck in and put away before they can notice because otherwise they want to pay me for them).
I honestly admit though i started with the kinettes because when my sister was sick 11 years ago they helped my family out so much...cancer society/relay for life because cancer seems to affect so many of my family members. I guess in someways the charities i choose to help are ones that have affected my family in some way shape or form. Maybe thats just a bit selfish of me but...that seems to be how it is.

Great idea for an article, not just to make some money from writing but there is a giving side that people need to be aware of too. We move a lot so when we start packing we decide what we are going to keep and what we are going to donate. My kids don't want for anything so when we start going through their clothes they don't beg us to stop because they know that it will be given to Goodwill and somebody will be able to use it.

Well, I have an interest in computers and I was thinking to myself that I lacked actual experience in the field so I decided to become a volunteer. I looked into one particular company call the RNIB or Royal National Institute for the Blind. I've now got the role of IT Home Visitor and you basically help blind people with their computer systems. They use special software but you can be called for any particular computer problem that they might have. The work is not that regular though. I thought that this would be a good way to help others and gain some invaluable experience in the process. It's certainly a good feeling that you receive when you help others. Andrew

Hi Ldyjarhead! I do a few things here and there where I can. Times are tough and it is hard to give like we used to. I donate clothes to a place here called Goodwill. They do a lot of things for people that are having a rough time. I also participate in food drives. Some are done at my daughter's schools and one was done by my daughter's girl scout troop. We donated a bunch of girl scout cookies to the troops across seas too. I always try to give a dollar or two when I see the Shriners and to the rescue squad. I figure a dollar given will come back twice..lol..if it doesn't..well..it was for a good cause.

I do volunteer things like clothing and recently I received a sample can of powdered baby formula in the mail, (my son is 7 so don't ask me why I got it ), and I gave that to the food bank..But I also take advantage of this ministry where I can donate things and also receive things back. Like last week I turned in a bag of clothes and got more clothes for myself and my son, plus some dishes and a caller ID I needed for my phone.

I have never been in a position to give financially, but volunteering has been a big part of my life. I have worked with dog rescue groups and volunteered at the school my daughters attend. I think I would go crazy without having something to do, since I am a stay-at-home mom. I feel good that I am giving back since I am in a really nice position as far as not having to work a full-time job. My volunteer habits have not really changed since the recession started.

dear ldyjarhead. my family is just one of the poor families in our community. we also need some helping hands, once in a while. but there are times that when some poor people come to our house and seek help, if we have something to give, we will give them. we have no lots of money and sometimes, with the small money we have, we still give some. most of the time we have nothing, so we took some old clothes that we seldom use and give them. that's all that we can give. but if we have more extra money, i wish i have, i will give them. and unfortunately, we live in different places, far, too far from each other. i wanted to help you with your cause, but i guess i can't...

I like to be a volunteer here in Uk but i have a son to look after. So to help little bit to the needy we donate clothes, our old but still good condition clothings, beddings and etc. Before the crisis struck on us, we used to donate to the WWF charity, every month we give small amount for our adopted tiger, coz i believe aside from human animals also needs our help to make our environment balance.
Cheers.
