100% PINOY: Divisoria o Ukay-Ukay?

Philippines

It's natural for a Filipino to be thrifty especially nowadays that the economy is going down and the price of everything is going up, up,up! Therefore, it's also not hard to think why places like Divisoria and Ukay-Ukay stalls were so crowded. Divisoria is a place where you can find almost everything, from band-aids to huge appliances, at a low price. Ukay-ukay stalls on the other hand, are places or stores where you can find imported or branded used clothes and things sold cheaply. Filipinos love to look for a bargain. Most of the time, they tend to be impulsive buyers too. They buy things just because they are cheap and not because they are needed. Are you a frequent visitor of Divisoria? Or do you prefer ukay-ukay instead?

Ukay-ukay all the way! Because we live in Baguio and there are swarms of them in here. Divisoria is far away so that's a no go. But when we were still in Bulacan, we go to Divi once in a while.

Haha! It's hard to imagine you going to Divisoria all the way from Baguio! The fare would cost you almost a bagful of things you could buy in that place, so it's really not a very practical thing to do. I live in Bulacan too, and the trip to Divisoria, in my opinion is not practical for me too since we have tiangge here and malls too. I think I will only go to Divisoria if I have many things to buy like Christmas gifts or decorations for a huge party because I think the more you buy in Divisoria, the more you can save.

Marilao. hehe! It's not that far from Divisoria compared to Malolos, Baliuag or (goodness) Bustos. How about you? Two years ago, a thrift mall (it's like a small 168 mall) called star shop mall was built in Meycauayan, a nearby town in Marilao. The prices of the things for sale there are just like the prices of the things you can find in Divisoria so people here tend to go there instead than to waste fare going to Divisoria. i think more and more stores like this is being built all over the country simply because it's good business! Never would you find that place with only ten customers at a time. It always has many customers especially during Christmas season.

We also buy ukay-ukay because it is cheap than to buy new clothes or item. Now that we are still in crisis we prefer to buy there than in mall. Ukay-ukay is a big industry here many Filipinos love to buy it. My mother always bought clothes from Ukay-ukay for our clothes for daily use at home. What you should need to do is to washed the clothes properly and pour it with hot water to kill the bacteria. Now that life is difficult we should be practical on buying things.

from my own experience, i saved more money in ukay ukay than in divisoria. In Divisoria, more stuffs are almost identical and I woulnt want to wear something that everybod'y wearing..That's just me, I dont know what other Filipinos think. Thats a nice question. Happy myLotting! =)

I am one those who love bargains. Since I am very far from Divisoria, I just go to the ukay-ukay. There are many nice clothes which we can find in ukay-ukay and the good thing about ukay-ukay is that there are no duplications of style.

Yes that is true, ukay ukay are great. My mother-in-law had found a brand new with tag gap shirt for just P50 and the owner even told her there was an authentic preloved LV bag sold only for P500. Boy it was snatched quickly i guess.

i prefer ukay ukay. divisoria is so crowded. i go to divi almost everyday to ride a jeep on my way to school so i know how bad it gets. it's a nightmare especially during christmas time.

I agree that Divisoria can be such a nightmare especially during Christmas season for the price of almost everything goes down and people can't resist a great bargain. With a large number of people visiting Divisoria everyday (even weekdays or simple days) the place has become a little more dangerous with snatchers, muggers or hold-uppers, and pick pockets that swarm the area. Also, i think the place needs a little more cleaning too. Most of the time, garbage are all over the place, even in the middle of the street. That's a major health hazard. Sigh.

If there's an ukay-ukay store in my area, i'll pay it a visit.. i might find something to buy there but if i'm looking for a specific thing to buy and i want more choices, i'm going to divisoria.. either tutuban or 168 Mall.. everything there is cheap and affordable.. not so good quality though..

I guess we can't really expect such good quality out of something you buy for only 5 or ten pesos, hehe. But I personally think that the span of the things depends on the person who uses them. I mean, even if you have that expensive shoes, it will only last a month or even just two weeks if you don't take care of them. Even the cheapest thing in the world could worth a fortune if someone values it much, right?

I love going to Divisoria. We go there especially when the Holiday Season is coming. Apparently, you can save much more than if you were to buy in Department Stores. I love to go there and go to different places like 168. There are variety of choices. Like household appliances, clothing, accessories, gadgets. If you want to save more and spend less, there is no place like Divisoria.

When I went to 168 mall for the first time, I was reminded of the look of the Tutuban mall when I was still a child. Lots of people. hehe! What I love in 168 mall are the things that are sold there. From a simple pair of fake earrings to the latest gadgets like cellphones, mp5, and laptops! I think I even saw a flashlight for sale at the price of five pesos! Wristwatches for a hundred pesos, a pair of shoes for a hundred and fifty pesos, and some buy one-take one promotions for clothes and other stuff. You have to be careful of choosing what you buy though. Buying cheap things doesn't mean being practical. Some of the things you buy at a low price are a little defective.

I go for ukay ukay instead of divisoria. Divisoria is so crowded and many holdapers and pick pocketers walk around the area. Unlike at ukay ukay you can find it anywhere, some are air conditioned also.

I prefer going to Divisoria despite the traffic and the place being so crowded especially during Christmas season. I really was not into the Ukay-ukay because of the fact that they were used clothes. But before I moved here (US) I needed some winter clothes. And I found great bargains from an ukay-ukay store near my home. And they looked very nice on me too. Just want to share with you something. People here where I live love bargains too. The Salvation Army Store is quite a bargain. It is like our Ukay-ukay too. They don't just sell used clothes but almost all the things you can find in a department store. The difference is they are used and very cheap. People would clean up their homes and give away stuff as a donation to the store. Then the store use the money they earn to help people in need. And a lot of people go to this store-some even made their homes pretty with used furniture that would cost only a small fraction of its brand new price. And almost all of the stuff really look as if they were never used. I am a regular customer of the Salvation Army store and I guess you can say I changed my mind about our ukay-ukays. I just love them now!

I am an ukay-ukay fan..most of my dresses are from ukay-ukays.I love finding nice clothes for a fraction of mall prices.I feel proud because I am probably the only one with that piece.I don't want to see somebody else wearing the same dress as I have.also,I am proud of my ukay finds.a lot of people find them lovely also.

hmmm.... hehe i frequently visit ukay-ukay because divisoria is far from our home or shall i say in cebu... hihi but i think the difference between them is that in ukay-ukay you seldom find items that are still in good condition... unlike in our beloved divisoria, all items are new and i can say that the quality is also good =) it's been two years since i visited manila.

Yes it is wise to be thrifty especially with recession. SOme of the items though low priced have good quality so really no wonder that stores like ukay ukay and divisoria are still doing well. If you can spend less and get more items, i see nothing wrong to it. Not all branded items have good quality anyway.

I'll go for ukay-ukay.. Quality products for a very cheap price.. i once tried ukay-ukay in Baguio and my mom couldn't believe that I bought those nice clothes for a very very cheap price ranging from 80 pesos to 20 pesos.. I'll be back next week there again..

What a tough choice to make because I love both! Divisoria and Ukay-Ukay stores are really sources of great finds at very very penny-stretching prices. Sorry, I call it a draw for me. I wanna have the best of both worlds :-)

We only have ukay-ukay here in Zamboanga. Divisoria here is a barangay. hehe. I would want to visit Divisoria in Manila though if I get the chance. I do go to ukay-ukay here. It's a thrill to find good clothes at very cheap prices. And yeah, you're right, we are impulsive buyers!

Hi there, i had a chance to visit Divisoria before yes its true that you can find almost all things there and its very cheap and you can get more discount if you buy more. Divisoria is away from our place so dont have a chance to go there always. The only thing that i dont like in Divisoria is that there are lots of people and too much heat. Anyway about Ukay-ukay, i first knew this when we go to Baguio City, there are lots of Ukay-ukay there and very reasonable price. Now here in our place Ukay-ukay is now in demand you can see it anywhere. There are many varities to choose from like branded bags, shoes, slippers, clothers and other stuffs. I do go to Ukay-ukay but not always. My sister is eager for Ukay-ukay she was always there to see new stuffs. Keep on mylotting, hope i can make sense here.

Ukay-Ukay! Divisoria can't be coined as 100% pinoy, since it's just that not everywhere you could find a divisoria. Mindanao, and I think Visayas too doesn't have divisoria. We have Cogon Market (Visayas) and SM (meaning Sa Muslim-an, or market places where cheap goods, shoes, bags and other accessories mostly ukay-ukay are sold, most of the times it is the our Muslim brothers and sisters who are running these places, that's why it's commonly called as SM), for places that don't have Divisoria.

We usually buy at Divisoria but not the ukay ukay. in Divisoria, you get to buy new stuffs and not get the secondhand ones in ukay ukay. So i prefer buying at Divisoria rather than the other one.

what a funny question! very pinoy! :-) well, if you ask me, i would go for ukay-ukay. i am from the visayas and we don't have divisoria here. it your question is so easy for me. i think it would have been different if we had divisoria here. i think that's the same as night market? in cagayan de oro, they also have a place they call divisoria. i'm a little confused because the divisoria in cdo sells okay2x. so what's the difference with the real divisoria in manila? anyway, i just went to an ukay-ukay a few hours ago. it's really good because you can buy branded jackets, t-shirts, pants, etc for only 10-50 pesos. it's really cheap in our place. i think we have the cheapest prices here. i bought 5 items. all were branded with tags of dockers, wilson, and addidas. and i only spent less than 200 pesos! amazing huh?
