If you are like me you like your personal space. But working here in a hospital makes that difficult. My definition of personal space is no closer than 6 feet for more than 1/6 of a minute. But the hallways here are clogged with people. I am sure the crowded sidewalks of a city is a different story. But here I am working. I am a computer programmer so it is just an office to me. No such impingement on my personal space has happened in prior jobs.

I like my space as well. I have been working at home lately, so I usually don't have a problem with people in my work space. I used to have a problem at my last employer. Everyone would seem to come into my office and congregate, and it would it would drive me crazy.

Not sure I am helping my original comment. And not sure I can help something that happens in the past. But I learned in managing multiple priorities seminar, that you need to stop that behavior. If you sit outside the boss's office and your job is something other than "yes he is here" and "no she is out" then don't do it.
