100% PINOY: CALL CENTER o ABROAD?

BPO or Business Process Outsourcing is now booming here in the Philippines. Major cities like Makati, Quezon City, Baguio City, Davao City and even Pampanga and Bulacan have call center facilities. Why do more and more Filipinos want to work in a call center? A lot of reasons actually! First is of course, the money! It is quite rewarding to work in a call center. The compensation is good. Second, the benefits are impressive (especially health benefits, I know a call center that gives a half-a million worth of health insurance to its employees) plus bonuses or incentives for sales accounts. Leaves that are often convertible to cash if you don't use them. Third, you don't have to be a graduate to be an agent. Especially nowadays that tuition fees are very expensive, lots of Filipino students are not able to finish their studies. Years ago, if you're not a college graduate, more likely you will end up in a job that doesn't pay much (sales lady, carpenter, tricycle driver, etc.) Now, BPO companies giving opportunities to even undergraduates, it's not that hard to land a job in one. All you need to have is basic typing skills (which you can acquire with practice), basic computer knowledge, and conversational English. Those qualities can be acquired by a short-term training and you don't have to be a college graduate to learn all that. those are just three of the reasons why people want to work in a call center, but I'm sure some of you who have experience working as an agent could enumerate more. I'm glad that the presence of BPO companies here in the Philippines have lessened the number of Filipinos who have to leave their families and homes behind to look for opportunities abroad since most of our countrymen end up being abused (especially women) and being victimized by illegal recruiters. one thing that is sad to know though is that whether you are working in a call center or abroad, you're still serving foreigners. though there are call centers for local companies like PLDT, GLOBE, SMART, etc., the compensation given by them cannot compare to the rates given by foreign companies. how can 6 or 8 thousand a month compensation by local companies compare to a minimum of thirteen thousand a month given by foreign BPOs? On the second hand, working abroad is one of the things most Filipinos think of as a way to escape poverty. Women (mothers mostly) work as domestic helpers while men often work as factory workers. Just a little percentage of those who work abroad are professionals. Would you rather work abroad? or would you settle for call center employment?

Working in call center is very stressful my friends is working in a call centers their complained that you are always lack of sleep and your health gonna suffered because if the night shift. I want to work in call center but I can't work in night shift and my life is very stressful. I admit that the salary is much higher compare to the local companies here but compare to working abroad it is much higher. I watched a local show that the topic is about skilled workers. I'm surprised that women welders is in demand abroad they can earn P100,000 a month. Barista is also in demand the salary is P70,000 in a month. It is so tempting to work in abroad if your salary is like that you can't can compare it here.

I worked in a call center before and yes the pay is good. But because of the shifting schedule, I do not think that it is for everybody. Sometimes your health suffers because you change shift and your body clock takes a while to adjust to the new schedule. I would still want to work abroad since I believe that it has better opportunities and it would definitely widen your horizon being exposed to different culture.

I agree with you, call center jobs can be quite stressful and your health might suffer for it. I am not into the shifting schedules also because it affects my body clock. I've tried working in a call center before, and yes, it was very rewarding. But I suffered from pneumonia after a couple of months because the workplace was very cold and having less sleep made me more vulnerable to sickness. the doctor advised me to take days of bedrest. I tried to file for a medical leave since the leave was what the doctor ordered. Yet the company did not approve it because according to them, "they are handling so many calls that the number of agents they have cannot accommodate them all" that's why they cannot grant me my request. So my pnuemonia got worse, I wasn't even able to talk because of the cough and I lost my voice for two weeks. The company wasn't even sympathetic! I felt bad that I worked in a company that all it matters to them is just money and business so I resigned. hehe. Bad call center job experience. Not all BPO companies are like that of course. i heard most of them are good. yet I still think call center job is not for me.
