I made some hummus last night.

It is one of my favorite things to have as a dip. It is a Middle Eastern dish made from Garbanzo beans or Chick Peas. Either name works. I have bought it before, and made it before and it is really simple. I enjoyed it as a side dish when I had dinner with Grandpa Bob in the restaurant where Debbie works. Have you tried hummus? Do you like it? Have you ever made it?

I've heard of it but never tried it. It doesn't sound tasty with just chick peas...do you add something else to it? Marsha

I am told real hummus has to have tahini, which is a spread or butter made from sesame seeds. I put in olive oil, salt, lemon juice, garlic, tumeric, and cumin and sometimes other things. Some people like roasted red pepper, others like crushed black olives. Think of it as the Middle Eastern version of refried beans.

I had hummus once. It was used for a dip on some kind of bread. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I did. I made myself some couscous tonight. That and I sauteed myself some mushrooms to mix into it. It was pretty good. I just wish I could make tabouli like my Nana. I don't know how she does it, but I've never tasted anyone's tabouli half as good as hers. I went off on a side dish tangent didn't I?

I love that stuff, and my husband makes awsome hummus. He makes a lot of other wonderful stuff too. He's the cook in the family, I'm only good for setting the room on fire. haha My Aunt makes it too, and they serve wonderful stuff at the greek restaurant not far from here. Now you've got me wanting some. :)

I have heard of the name but that is about it. I really do not think I have ever tried it before though. I have never tried to make it either. I may give it a try sometime if it is available to me.

Yes, I have made it in our blender, and I love it! I add a bit of garlic and parsley and other spices, it's delicious. Garbanzo beans are high in fiber too, so it's also a healty food. I haven't made this in awhile, so I think I'll make some tomorrow. Thanks for the idea! :O)

Ohhhh my bf and I love this stuff, but I haven't made it. I don't really know how. I'll look for a recipe online and play around with it. Maybe I'll start making my own instead of buying from Trader Joe's. Any tips on what other kind of spices? I know garlic for sure (he loves garlic). But parsley, ain't that gonna make it green? Not really appetizing with that kind of look and texture, no?

You can skip the parsley, just use your imagination with whatever you're craving. We even used a little spinach once, and it was very tasty. You could use a little canned carrots for sweetness and color, Good luck with the hummus!

Yes, very healthy. I put olive oil and Tahini and lemon juice. Garlic and cumin and tumeric and after it was all done I stirred in some cilantro. All those herbs are healthy and the olive oil and tahini are healthy fats.

I've eaten Hummus before. I did enjoy it, especially with the green greek olives that haven't been pitted (sorry can't remember name, been a long time), and some pita bread is great. Also, with some fresh avacado and cold spinach, yummy! The powdered bulk stuff is pretty good for camping, you just mix with water. That way, you can use just what you need and don't have to worry about the hummus going bad.

I have never seen that. Where do you find it? It sounds like an excellent high protein camping food.

It's been a long time, but I believe we purchased it at a Fred Meyer store in their bulk section, maybe near the health foods. I think our local health food store also sells it.

First off I think it is so cool that you and Grandpa Bob got to meet and have dinner together. I have tried hummus before, its alright. Its not something that I like alot, no I have never made it before. I never thought it had much flavor to it. Actually come to think about it, I was once in a store and they had samples of hummus, some of the different ones were really good.

I think you have to add some different seasonings to give a lot of flavor. I find that the lemon juice is very refreshing in the summer. I hope to meet more online friends in the future.

I have tried hummus, and although I do love chick peas, I wasn't extremely excited about it. Maybe it was the way it was done, but it wasn't all that good. How do you make yours? Maybe I should try to do it myself and see if it will come out a bit different.

See the answer above. I used tumeric, cumin, garlic and cilantro this time. I was hoping I had a can of black olives to put in, but I did not.

I love hummus. Me and my hubby usually make it at home, we have also found hummus kits at the store and sometimes make that but I love homemade hummus the best, it blows away any store box mix. We also make our own tahini and add it to the Garbanzo bean mix. My son loves Hummus also which is suprising because he's a very picky eater and mostly eats only vegetarian meals ( he can't stand the taste of almost all meats, but sometimes he will eat ham or peperoni) So hummus is a big treat here at my house. We usually buy pre-made pita bread from the Indian market and coat a cookie sheet with olive oil then cut the pita bread in 4's then lay the pita slices on the cookie sheet then bake the pita bread for 5 minutes on each side then take it out of the oven . It's nice and crispy and goes great with hummus as a side dish to curry. You are right about how hummus is addictive, I crave it weekly..About.com has a lot of various recipes for hummus and tahini if anybody here who hasn't tried it yet, it's easy to make and delicious!

Great expansion on the discussion. I am sure that this is a very healthy food for your picky eater. I especially like it in the summer, because I get tired of sandwiches with lunch meats, and this is healthier.

I LOVE hummus!! Why is it so high calorie?! Everything I love has lots of calories. I like the spicy type I can get in Kroger, it's just spicy enough but not enough to burn my mouth. I'm a wimp when it comes to really spicy stuff--I lived nearly 30 years in the Southwest but couldn't take the salsa there that burned my mouth. I'd ask for the mildest but it still burned. I looked up hummus recipes once but it seemed so labor intensive. Is yours easy to make? How do you do it?

It is not that high calorie. 435 calories in a cup full. Who eats a cup full of dip? It is just about 51 calories per ounce, compared to butter or margarine at99 clories or so per ounce. It is also high in fiber and depending on what it is made from it has vitamin C and lots of antioxidants. I start with a can of chick peas, pour it in a bowl, put in salt, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, what ever spices I choose and use a stick blender or immersion blender to blend it smooth. Also good to do in a food processor.

I have heard of it on a game show actually.LOL Its the first time that Ive heard that its a food cause whenever I see that word even with the 2 "m"'s I still think of the word 'humus' which we know as soil or organic matter.LOL The question on the game show is that given three words the contestants had to pick a word that are dippings or sauces. Most of the words given were unfamiliar to me and so as I tried to answer at home, I never thought 'hummus' was a dip! Anyway, since you have mentioned about it, I soo love to try it now. I really dont know how to cook and I dont know if we can get that here. Well, its nice to hear that you have been having a great time hanging out with other myLot friends. Hope I can experience that someday too.

I can understand your confusion, I have thought of the rich soil myself. This one is easy to make. I will look and see where you are. Most countries have some kind of bean, and I know that they most all make good dips.

I have never tried hummus. As far as that goes, lol, I never knew what it was until I read your discussion. Let's say it's not at all what I thought it was, and it actually sounds good. I love garbanzos, and like to add them to lots of dishes, salads, etc. Now that I know what hummus is I think I might try it. Might be a yummy dip with nachos and all. Thanks.

So that's what's in there, Garbanzo beans huh? Well I'm wiggling my hips to the thought of making it. I love it and I usually purchase it because I don't know how to make it. If you would indulge this short order cook (I have two kids) I would really appreciate it. Waiting...

That is strange, as most health food and natural healing people tell you that tumeric is a great treatment for arthritis, and cumin as well. That is why I put them both in my hummus.Olive oil is also supposed to be good for you.
