While Answering..

To students and those who became students,
Okay, say that you got called to recite in class or your on your seat and answering questions for a quiz or a very important exam, how do you feel?
Indeed, its something common that students do every now and then which isn't that surprising and might not be interesting yet, there is that feeling wherein one feels when they know the answer.
Some would be so eager to give their answers that they don't mind checking if its right in spelling or pronunciation (^_^") the conviction that they have that it is right is such a nice feeling. Firmly and without a doubt that we are stating that is correct.
Then, there are those times that we do answer but, we are not entirely sure if its right or wrong. Some would end up doubting themselves and the other answers that they have provided. That uncertainty that crawls up our back which raises our shoulders while lowering our heads, thinking of what answer we should give.
Afterwards, we would realize if our answers were correct or not. The building confidence within ourselves when our right answers get recognized while the demeaning feeling when we find out that our answers were wrong. The relief that we get when our guesses were correct and the regret that strikes us when we doubted ourselves in which answers that we should had given.
How do you feel when you answer? Be it on recitations, quizzes, exams, or perhaps in real life where you no longer concern yourself in getting a high score?

I used to panic internally when the teacher is starting to call names 'randomly', Even when I have studied hard or read all of the material and understanding every bit of it. That's the usual atmosphere in our class during high school anyways especially when the teacher is a strict pioneer (those who were the first teachers when the school opened). I was also always "on the edge" back then and always thought that I failed the exam, regardless if I studied hard and filled all of the blanks in the answer sheet. Back then, you just never know and it's not a good thing if you're relaxed.
These days (in college)I dont get nervous anymore. That's also when I wasnt able to brush up or even ask a classmate for a possible answer to the question for recitation. I guess I just learned to wing it. Ive also been fortunate to not be called for the questions that I absolutely have no idea about. It would be either I have an idea on how to answer the question or I dont get called.^_^
The quizzes are a different thing though. It's not that I get nervous but I do get frustrated when I have an idea on the questions but I didnt review so I didnt have anything to answer. I do review during exams but I only study hard on those subjects that Im on the brink of failing. So far so good, it could be better of course but Im content with it.
I guess my rule of thumb in answering would be not to expect anything good, else there is a guaranteed chance of being disappointed.

I use to panic when I was in elementary about recitations but, didn't happen when I was in high school. It all came back to that on certain subjects in college. I could wing it like you do but, there are times when I just didn't study or couldn't recall what we studied so blanks just keep on buzzing in my head. Later remembering when recitations are over (-_-")
On quizes or exams, yeah, we do have set backs like that.

Ah.. you have finally went over the fence on this one.
To think that students would like to get school over with while those who have already finished school would like to do it again (^_^")
Yeah, that feeling would eventually leave you by the time Junes have come by..

Going over old mails in my inbox and getting to read this again, I was reminded of how school life was just a few weeks ago.
It is kinda bittersweet when the reality hits you that its over. Still, I get those moments when I think/feel that I have classes this June and Im just on my summer break.

hi ratyz!^^
i hated being called in a recitation. i don't like oral exams! i don't like recitations. the only recitation i enjoyed was back in gradeschool during those recitations of multiplication table where you compete with a classmate and for every correct answer you advance one step forward.
as for other kind of recitations, like being called to answer a question in chemistry, i always feel nervous. i always feel like my answer would be wrong. i hated it. especially when the teacher will give a follow-up question like "what else?" when you didn't really think of other possible answers except for the first one. i really prefer written exams.

Indeed, I did feel that before, especially when I wasn't prepared to begin with. There were also times that I would be hoping that the teacher would ask me a question that I know I could answer. Then again, there were those professors back then that knew what kind of questions would put up a challenge for a particular student. Their experience of teaching probably granted them that skill to observe if a student is prepared, ready or really nervours that what he or she reviewed would probably be gone due to being so nervous about reciting. (^_^")
Grade school didn't seem like that for me. Though some teachers back then incorporated a game-like recitation, some teachers, especially those who have been teaching the same subject over and over, would still stick to making a particular student stand to answer as the other students would either see if the reciting student would be impressive on answering, embarrassed on not being able to answer or just completely ignore the whole thing as they have developed this nonchalant attitude.
Yeah, written exams would be leveled for every student's capacity when it comes to their studies. Then again, some teachers would decide if the questions that they would give be easy, challenging or really difficult to answer by just normal memorization or study. We tend to observe where a particular student would be good at. Some students might be also good at written exams along with recitations and then, those who were not so good in recitation give their best during written exams. Good thing about written exams would be that you just have to wait for the results if you pass or don't pass at all. And while answering, you don't have to be nervous while other students and/or the teacher is looking and waiting for your answer(s).. (^_^")
Hey~!
Its been a long time, secretbear! How are you??

Hi ratyz!^^
I didn't like recitations. I always dreaded the time that I will be called by the teacher or the professor. I am good with studying and written tests but I'm not good with oral exams. I always tend to forget the answer. And I can't think clearly because I tend to get so nervous. I remember there was one subject where we had an oral exam for a periodical test. It was nerve-wrecking. There was only one question. Answer it wrong and you fail. .

The last time i took a test was when i was trying to get my broker's license... it was so difficult that i was not really confident about all of my answers... so i can't say i passed with flying colors... i am just glad i passed.... but with recitations and quizzes... those days of taking such are all behind me... unless i go back to school... which i don't think i would...

Yeah, its the relief that we feel when we have already gotten over those challenging times in our lives. Sometimes, we think that its too hard and we're glad that its all over. That's what I felt when I passed our thesis defence. I wouldn't like to do it again as it took a good amount of time to prepare as well as the nerve wrecking experience to be questioned about something that you poured yourself into without much confidence.
I sometimes get to listen to other classes at my work and I sometimes want to answer but, of course, I shouldn't do that anymore as the students there should be the ones doing that.
Sometimes thinking if I'd have a second break, I guess I'd do it right that time.. though, I am not really sure if it would ever happen at all (^_^")

If I don't know the answer I become honest to myself and let it say "sorry but i don't know. It doesn't matter to me. What important is i become honest no matter what happen. It is a habit of a good discipline. Some students tempted to cheat to avoid embarassing moment during recitation or recieve low grades.

Yeah, it was like that during my earlier days of study when students would feel embarrassed to have everyone see that you don't know the answer. Its also more embarrassing when the teacher had already asked the question and other students have been raising their hands just to answer the question.
It slowly faded during high school as familiarity with the teachers as well as for your other classmates have been established. As if, knowing them, its acceptable if one student would know the answer in a particular subject or not at all as, each student has been known to be able to answer or not answer questions whenever asked to recite. Of course, its a different matter when it comes to exams as everyone would be studying for it. (^_^") still, cheating can't be avoided for some students.
I always had that notion that, its better to leave a question blank if I totally don't have an idea about it than to struggle it over and settle it with a made-up answer.

Yes, that's the only thing that we could do as students, we have to study so that we can be prepared for any questions that might be asked to us. (^_^")
Yeah, there is that upsetting feeling when we really want to answer but, we either don't know the answer or just simply don't know..
