What is the spirit of THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA?

"He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish"This is the note at beginning of the novel written by Ernest Hemingway.It is simple words and elegancy.When we read all over the book we all touched beacuse the old man caught a big fish but when he came back form sea the big fish was eaten all over by shark.The consequence was the old man got nothing but the spirit.Well,what is this spirit you think?
