I went to bowwow.com.au and did a few name searches for my current pets.
I'm not pushing this website, I just did a google search and it was near the top.
My big, solid black, fat, fuzzy, mama kitty's name is Lulu... according to this site, it means: Famous Battle Maiden. It is also the name of a popular '60's British pop singer.
Clementine, my sweet, teenage, tabby... Merciful. She is a sweet one, quiet, when she's not in heat!
And finally, Monroe, my skittish, calico... From The Red Swamp. Hmmm... that might explain the skittishness? Makes her sound like some creature! lol She's very sweet too!
We didn't research the names before we named them, just went with gut feelings... and their personalities pretty much match up to what this site came up with.
How about your pet's name? What does it mean? and did you know what it meant when you named it?

That's pretty interesting. I guess our names are just too interesting to be on their. Our first pet, our bunny, is named Mephistopheles, but we call her (we thought she was a boy for a long time, but guess not!) Staphi. Then we got our second pet, a cat who we named Asrael. Neither of them are on the list, but we knew what the names meant already anyway. Mephistopheles is a devil/demon in the Faust legend. Bunny was pretty mean when we first got her and everyone thought she was evil, but she's calmed down a bit. ^_^ Then Asrael is the spirit of evil. :)
They DID have a meaning for our newest pet, though. He's a little kitty and we named him Loki (says Norse God of mischief and evil, brother of Thor, son of Odin). By then, we'd already had the pattern going, so we figured we should just keep with it. ;) They all enjoy getting into things, but they're all really sweet and adorable.

I actually had to do research for this question, Shadorma! :)
I have four cats that are everything to me besides my husband. I have reasons I named them their names and then I'll put the meanings behind them here, too.
Thomas is our eldest boy. He is now seven years old and I was in my early teens when I adopted him. I actually named him because I thought the name was adorable off of an online cartoon, "Thomas Timberwolf." The name "Thomas" actually means "a twin." This doesn't really have an effect for us besides the fact he might as well be twins with my husband...they have the same personalities, but then again, they both are Cancer signs!
Bridget is our eldest girl. She is three and I named her Bridget because I thought the name was a very cute feminine name with a masculine edge, and I've always loved female names like that. The name actually means "strong", which is very true. She is a Sagittarius and loves to explore her world...and while she is a beautiful girl, she also has that wild side which makes the name perfect for her.
Jonathan is our youngest boy, and he's only four months now. My husband wanted a "Johnny" so we named him Jonathan and are calling him Johnny. It means "Gift of God." This could be interpreted in many ways, but he is such a joy to have aroun.
Hannah is our youngest girl, and is Johnny's twin. I love the name Hannah. It's so sweet and purely feminine, and that's exactly how Hannah is and what makes her different from Bridget. Her name means "Grace of God." It's so funny to have two pure white kittens that are "of God." They truly are lovable little joys, though.
GREAT discussion! :)

I forgot to mention that both Johnny and Hannah are Pisces. I do know that the sign is very spiritual by its nature, so maybe that explains the "of God" meanings. It's up to interpretation. :)

Dupe - no match
Holly - bringer of good luck
Jasmine - fragrant flower
Moki - stands for MOnster KItty
Nubs - he was born with club feet
Sissy - a timid person (well, that doesn't fit her!)
Sugar - a sweet powder from sugar cane
And there you have it...

I'm surprised they didn't have a match for Sweet Pea! That's an adorable and somewhat popular name...at least where I'm at.
It sounds like they were pretty spot on. :)

What a cute Site you found!
Let's see, my first Dogs Name was Odo (like Odo from Star Trek ,haha), they didn't have a meaning for that name, and I'm not surprised.
My second Dogs name is Dolly (she just looked like a Dolly the firt time I saw her, that's why named her that), which apparently means: "Lady of Sorrow". But she isn't!XD
My third Dogs name is Kronos (also from Star Trek), which didn't have a meaning on that site, either, but I know that Zeus father had the same Name, and that that guy was an horrible man, hahaha.
My fourth Dogs name is Jaenie, but they didn't hd any meanings for that name.
My fith Dogs name is Sora, the site did not had any meaning for that name either but I know that it means "Sky" in Japanese, that's why I picked it.
And my Cats name is Terry, which, according to the site, means "Smooth, polished, and tender"! Sounds like a cat discription, doesn't it?
Cheers!

I have a cat too. I like cats as my favorite pets. The one I now have at home is so pretty an so sweet, very intelligent too. Yes, I spent some time searching for a suitable name, a name that would represent her nature and characteristics. Took some time, and finally I was able to decide on the right name. And, that's "Picky". That exactly represents her nature. She is really picky about things, especially food. She would not eat different kinds of food, only just the kind she selects. Oh, Picky, Picky, really Picky !! Ha ha !

when we named our cats, we didn't pick just any pet name, we actually looked at their personality and named them accordingly. One is Boss, he loves to be in charge, he always stopes the other two cats when they start fighting and hurting each other. he is very protective of other animals. he doesn't do what i tell him, although he loves me very much, he does what he feels is best. sometimes he would do something just to show that he is the boss and never takes orders lol. We also call him Big Guy because he is the biggest cat i've ever seen. second cat is Baron Münchhausen, or just Baron for short. he is very imaginative guy and he loves to explore new boxes and closets. he loves sitting under the blanket and hunts imaginary dragons :) we also call him Little Guy because although he is actually much biger then most cats, he is the smallest of the 3. Oh and i call him crazy cuteness because he runs around all day like crazy, and he is very cute, but then so are the other two :). the third cat is Rocky because when he fights he actually boxes. he gets up on his back paws and hits 3-4 times with his left paw and one big swipe with the right one follows. But now we think we should've named him Romeo because he is very shy and romantic. he also loves sleeping between my legs and sometimes hug a leg... doesn't feel too good when i try to move at night because i get a leg full of claws lol.

What a fun site! My dogs are Rosie- "Rose - The most beautiful of flowers" and Jack- "From John - God's gracious gift". I have a pet mouse named Ianto and his name didn't show up on that site. But it's a Welsh name that means "Gift Of God".

I got the name of my dog from the Movie Marley and me. And the couple in the book and real life story got the name from Bob Marley the singer.
I am not sure what the name means tho, only that my terrier mix can be a chewer like Marley, from Marley and Me tho not as bad, he is a mild chewer compared to that dog.

My dog's name is Zeus and we knew that since we were getting a Rottweiler, that we wanted a powerful, strong, and dominated name. Therefore, we researched different male dog names and we came across Zeus; which means the ruler of the Gods, power, etc... I knew that's what I wanted, because he is a big, strong, a powerful dog. We got him to be a pack leader and leaders need strong names. I love his name and it fits him very well. They say you will know if a dog loves his name or likes his name if he responds quickly and Zeus responded quickly. I love his name and so does he. Everyone who has pets or want a pet should research names and really think about the names that they're giving their pets. You will never have to worry about explaining why, when, where, and how you got the name. Everyone would know that you either researched or put some thought into your pets' name.
