Mariah Carey said that Flipinos are like monkey because of keep on imitating the international singers.
We are born a natural artist and I don't think this talent would be limited as to appreciating songs from international artist.
If you are a Filipino how would you take this accusation?

I would get offended if generally, someone calls me a monkey. A monkey is an animal, I'm a human, so it's two different species..
Unless it's meant as a joke (but it's hard to digest, really), I would take offense. Depends on the circumstances, but it's not a nice remark to hear should it being said to me.

Actually, reports say that Mariah was not doing well at the time that she made that comment, although I can't seem to find a proof of it. They say that she was "depressed", and was doing things without thinking. Although I would admit that I hated that comment, especially now that Ka Freddie (a well known singer/composer here in the Philippines) accused other local artists of "not having a sense of pride as Filipinos" by singing foreign songs, and that is the very reason why foreign artists calls our own artists "monkeys" (at least according to him).

I heard the news somewhere in the 90's about Mariah Carey called Filipino a Monkey. Of course this are hurting words but I don't take it personally. It is just a product of bitterness and a criticism. First of all, we are not monkey but human which makes Mariah Carey wrong. I admire Mariah, especially her songs, but I don't take it on her. I already forgive her for calling as such. It is not our mistake if we are talented , If I were Mariah, I should be happy because we sing her songs, it only means we are supporting her music, we believe in her talent. On the other side, it is much better if we make our own rendition of a song to make it our own. Like what American Idol contestant do, atleast in that way we can separate ours from the original, we are not repeating the song.

did she really say that ??
i am not a filipino, but if she really said that - then, she's really mean and dumb!
i am sure when she was growing up, and still learning to find her own singing style, she was imitating somebody, singing like her favourite singer.. so - that makes her a monkey as well, doesnt it.. ?

I am not a Filipino and I am wondering why Mariah Carey did not kept her mouth shut to begin with, that statement makes no sense to me at all, sounds hateful and it makes her look ugly to me, and I was a Filipino that's how I would feel too.
And because we are in the USA I will say to me Filipinos singers are international singers, there will always be a style of music that is popular and I guess if that's what people want to hear, other people will sing it.
But gee! what a dumb thing to say, if Mariah Carey had any Filipino fans she lost them by saying stupid things like that.

I am a filipino though that statement hurts but honestly no. At least she realized that Filipinos are great imitator, which just means that we are also a nation of singers. The difference is just that, she is famous and we are not.
There are also good singers of ours who followed their own path. But inorder to make it big worldwide, you have to show as a singer that you can sing as good as them or maybe better than them!

Yes! We have our own talent in singing and this is not a good joke in fact a monkey cannot sing but it has a quick catch up.
I guess she had just mistook of this thing. Filipinos in general are talented and let us be heard in the whole world.
International artist like Mariah Carey should not deprive our "Kababayan" to voice their voices.
Let our golden voices entertain the whole earth.

Very well said. As a matter of fact, I just arrived from China and most bars have Filipino singers. Isnt that amazing? In Thailand, the same! Indonesia too!
Mariah Carey might not in her right mind with she said that!

If Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution is indeed true, then Mariah Carey is also a monkey. People, let us not judge Mariah Carey too harsh. Maybe she has some "basis" and we need to be open-minded to be able to see her "point." Is this confirmed anyway?

Well I'm not Filipino but if Mariah Carey actually said that I would be offended by that statement, but we cant be sure that the singer really said that or not its possible that she could have been miss quoted by the tabloids those tabloid magazines miss quote people all the time.

First, how sure are you that Mariah did say that? Any credible source? I am not a fan of Mariah's but sometimes, issues get out of hand because of sensationalism.
It was several years ago that such "gossip" surfaced. It actually narrated how Mariah, upon seeing or hearing Regine Velasquez performed, has commented: "Oh, that monkey can actually sing". However, there has been no confirmation to this day that Mariah actually said that.

We are all told that we are from monkeys (evolution) so even though I am not Filipino, I thought I would put my two cents in and say that both are insulting. Unles you agree that eveolution is in fact true and then there should be no issue in her comment.

I would not mind it if they will told me
that way. I just let them watch and stand
of who really I am and prove to them that
I'm not like that. I will start on my way
showing that Filipinos are having special
talents but not great imitator.
We should prove it to them that skills and
talents are there in every indidviduals not
only for them.

mariah carey is a good singer but guys if she is saying such a statement then the only thing you can do is just ignore the singer that it, we love because she sings good that why but it dosent means that she is a good speaker. we should remind her that she a singer so just keep singing and nothing else. that what we have to do guys.

Well, as for myself, i think it is rude, and uncaring to call another person any name. I have heard Philippino voices and they are very nice, from what i have heard.

Yeah, somehow while the Flipinos imitate them (international artists) it promotes their works.
They should be thankful that we Pinoys are appreciating there works by following and imitating their abilities.
I believe there's nothing wrong on that part only that Pinoys are also excelling in the field of show business and entertainment.

Hi, Zearah. I am not a Filipino. But, still i feel that every place, & even every person, has got an amazing set of talents. There may be similarities in the works of persons depending upon their field of work and interest. But, to claim straight away that they are imitating is really bad. Moreover, if somebody is following the steps of the greats, it does not mean they are imitating but they are following coz they admire those greats. The giants should encourage emerging talents, rather than discourage saying they imitate. Those are the words of those who are considered greats in their fields but their minds have been corrupted by success. They consider themselves to be the only one to produce original work. That is highly tragic and noticeable many times.
One good example comes from the Indian cricket giant Sachin, whose techniques are imitated around the world, mostly called the God of cricket. But, rather than saying that people imitate him, he encourages them saying "Choose right techniques from me and develop better ones of yours". Those are the words from a real genius.
Those words from Maria are really tragic and have come not only about Filipinos but many other nationalities, whose name i think i should not mention here. But, I seriously oppose them.
Happy Mylotting!!

Yeah! Everybody has a right to learn and develop their own unique talents. And I agree with you imitate is not an appropriate term I could suggest appreciate instead. There would be no giants if dwarfs are not existing. There would be no best if there's no good ones. One like her (Mariah) would excel because there are in low level. What would happen if all were best and all were excel. Who will adore who. Who will appreciate the work of the other if all are bests.
Thanks for sharing your part here.

i guess it's normal to react furiously to such a statement. i know that the generalization was to harsh for mariah to say but maybe there's some truth to it. i guess her point was that we filipinos should create our own brand of music. we should show to the world that we are talented and not just cheap imitators. that's the problem with our society today. i might sound like a hypocrite but we are so dependent on the west and even our youngsters imitate their culture. we usually jump into the conclusion that everything that is west is good. western t-shirts, wester food, western culture, western movies, and most especially western singers. I AM VERY SORRY TO SAY THIS, but if mariah was able to conclude that filipinos are monkeys (APING is synonymous to IMITATING) then by all means she has that right to say it because that is what she sees. let me give you an example: give me one famous filipino singer TODAY (not singers during our parents' or grandparents' time) who is unique and original in his performances where you can say, "THIS MUSIC TELLS SO MUCH ABOUT THE FILIPINO CULTURE." if you can give me a name, then i will recant everything i have just said...

Sorry but I would say Francis Magalona has his own ways of singing song, so is Gary Valenciano. Your right that everything about western is being idolized by filipino to much that we favor their things than ours. But not all things western are from the west some of it came from filipinos too... Thats just nature, we imitated what we regularly see, what we admire.
As for the main topic, for me she should have kept her mouth shut since its not nice, besides this filipino monkey she is talking about are also fans that makes her song popular. If our imitatig filipino individuals wont sing her song at all, I doubt if 25% of the country would even notice that song at all.

Hi zearah,
I´m English and I like Mariah Carey singing I don´t know if I like her as a Person.
Making these sort of statements in public is very rude and will only ruin her reputation specially with how hard it is to stay at the top in the Music World nowadays.
She could at least say she was sorry if she did´nt mean to say that make a public statement say if she has a website put it on there make it obvious as to what she means.
On those you have got talent programs what about the people who imitate other singers there. There are some really good impersonators that are making it to the top. So I reckon Mariah Carey should be careful as to how she voices her opinions. Opinions like that are really out of place anywhere albeit in public or in private.
