Broken xbox 360 game still plays??

My brother has NHL 09 for xbox 360. when my little nephew was bouncing around the house he jumped on the xbox while he was playing it and it damaged the disc. when resetting the console it would try to load but not go any furthur. i found later that i could insert the disc and play it from the hard drive since i had saved it to the hard drive and still play it as normal. CRAZY

That's very lucky. I used to copy games to my hard drive but it took too much space so I stopped. I wonder if it would help with scratched discs? I have a lot of friends with scratched COD4 discs that can't load certain maps
