What do you do with the ends of your bread loafs?

Personally I just throw them out. My neighbor used to feed them to the birds but that seems a little unhealthy to keep feeding the wildlife. Other people say they freeze them and make stuffing on holidays with them, or make grilled cheese with them. What do you do with your bread ends? Are you a fan of eating them as if they were normal bread?

That is my favorite part of the bread. I either just eat them like that or toast them and put butter or jelly on it. I will also make a sandwich with swiss cheese and salami. Delicious!

My hubby feeds the birds with them, why would it be unhealthy to feed the birds, especially in the winter, when they need food too and hard to find with the snow. Thank you for the suggestion of freezing it and then having it handy to make dressing. Good idea. I sometimes eat them if I only have one slice and the heel left and I want a sandwich, after all it is bread too.

Yes you are probably right, we live in a town might not be any different than some but I used to work at the hardware and I seen them come in and buy bird seed in 100 lb. bags, especially in the winter. I think the birds and squirrels need help to find food in the winter when there is snow on the ground and it is hard for them to find.

Where I live we don't have snow, but I just think it's for the wildlife to form a habit of relying on humans for food.

I love the crusts they are my favourite bit of a loaf of bread. I enjoy them smothered with cheese spread or peanut butter. When I was pregnant with my third son I use to get cravings for the crust with Marmite on it. When I lived with my parents it use to be a race to see who could get the crust first as my Dad also loves them as well.

I love marmite! I always put that onto bread, I don't like any other spreads, has to be marmite, I get through loads of jars, fortunately marmite is good for you, just as well cos I eat too much of the stuff!

i will toast it and put peanutbutter and jelly on it. i like the ends of the bread the best. the ends are part of the loaf that is cooked so i would say that the ends is normal bread just like the edge of each slice of bread is.

That sounds really good, too bad I already thew my ends in the trash.. :( but I wouldn't say it's normal bread because most of it is crust (which most people don't like) it has a different texture. And do you use both of the ends at the same time, like keep the first end until you get to the end of the loaf?

I love to eat the ends of the bread loafs. I actually love all kinds of bread and I love any part of them. I think that the ends, crust, and the middle are all yummy in my tummy.

We call them crusts and I love crusts! Whenever I open a packet of bread I will always eat the crusts first, it's the best part of the bread for me. I usually eat it straight from the packet with nothing on, or I will put my favourite spread onto it, marmite! My family know to leave the crusts for me.

It depends what type of bead though. I love love love the ends of french bread, but I was referring to sliced sandwich bread from the supermarket (sorry I didn't clarify in the discussion topic).

The crust of a good dark whole wheat bread is very healthy to eat. High heat during baking turns the carbohydrates and protein in the dough into new compounds that have high antioxidant potential. Whole wheat good for lowering blood pressure in middle-aged people with mildly high cholesterol and hypertension in middle aged people. I buy a 5 to 7 grain whole wheat bread and use all of it. Sometime the ends are too small for toasting or to make a sandwich so I dry it our and use it for stuffing or dressing and bread crumbs.

I don't like the ends of the loaf. To much crust. I usually just leave them there incase someone else that lives in my house wants to eat them, or if nobody eats them I will eat them, because I don't want to waste any food that I paid good hard earned money for.

My family eats the ends. But they do make excellent dressing. Around the holidays I will take them and freeze them and use them for dressing. I like it better than using croutons to make it. Very tasty!!!

Yumm that sounds good! I've never tried it in a dressing, perhaps I'll look some recipes and try it soon.

I use up all the bread. I use it for hamburgers, for croutons, to make a bread cake my family loves... Different kinds of bread have different uses. With dry baguettes I make bread crumbs. I try not to waste a single food at home. Take care

For hamburgers, haha that's a great idea! I always seem to run out of hot dog buns and the regular bread slices are too squishy so next time i'll try the bread ends, thanks!

Sometimes i will eat them toasted with some butter and jam if they are soft enough, otherwise i just through them out. The ends of bread seem like a waste of time really as most people I know just chuck them out too, when im sure there must be a better use for them considering at the end of the day we have paid for the whole loaf of bread!

Very true, now i'm tempted to calculate the amount of money you throw out when you throw the ends out (counting them as a slice).

I usually eat it with a spread. I don't think it taste less if its the edge of the bread. I usuallu put cheese on it or any spread that is available. I can do egg spread or chicken or cream cheese. It is also fun if I can have a soda or juice to be paired with it. Happy myloting.

If I don't eat them I keep them until I have enough and then I throw them all into the blender and use the crumbs to add to hamburger or I use them to make a coating mixed with herbs and spices for fish, chicken, steaks of all kinds and to thicken soups and stews which also adds flavor. I occasionally also add cinnamon and sugar and/or nutmeg and ginger to make a crispy topping for a desert. We also used to keep them whole and make bread pudding with them adding cinnamon and brown sugar and raisins to the heels and then whipped eggs and milk or cream to make a custard type of desert.

The ends of the bread loaves can be dried in the sun or made crisp in the oven, powered and kept to be reused as bread crumbs which can be used in a number of dishes.
