English is an international language and people who dont know english can be considered as illiterate. People who born in english speaking countries are lucky to have complete command over english from their birth. But for others it might be difficult to learn english, i also did lot of efforts but finally internet helped me a lot. Just by interacting to other people in english i improved a lot. Were you also weak in english ? If yes , then what you did to improve it. People who have good command over english can give their tips also. Happy mylotting!

Reading, writing and talking to others gives you better command over the language. You will master the language before you have realised how old you have grown. meapas.

I agree with you ,For overall mastering over any language we have to practice all the modules of that language like writing, reading, speaking and listening. Thanks for the response, happy mylotting!

Hello, just4you, what you're doing here is a fine example for anybody who wants to improve their English. Reading magazines, and watching OLD movies is also good. A lot of modern movies set bad examples for learners. I taught English in Thailand for over ten years, and your English is pretty good. Good luck.

Actually, I wasn't referring so much to grammar mistakes, as the swearing and hip hop phrases used, that make following a conversation difficult. Good lick.

I've always a special attraction for this great International language, "English". Though I think in my mother tongue "Oriya", I work and compose many expressions in "English". Regular writing has always helped me a lot to develop good English with me. Thanks and have good English!

I always make it a point to read articles and journal on the net, if I can't find a good book. I will always read something. And in mylot, there are lots of friends out there whom are good in their English language, whether it's their native language or not. I find mylot awesome to improve one's English definitely. Besides reading from a book, I also read magazines and try to interact with those in my community whom are using English to speak or those keening to learn English, I try to help them the best that I can..

interact with others directly, it doesn't matter whether you're wrong. You'll learn step by step.. I was studying while working, and it's been proven. Interactions helped me to improve my English! :)

Yeah, that was the thing that my teachers use to say. We must try to speak english, even if our sentence goes wrong then no problem, atleast you tried it. Glad to see your answer, thanks.

I'm a native English speaker so I never had the problem of learning it as a second language. But I found that reading was a good way to learn new words, proper spelling and grammar, etc. I see someone else has mentioned this, which makes sense because it really is a good way to learn. You might want to listen to people speaking English too, because it has it's own style and differs from the written word.

for me, the best way to learn a language is to use it. i am a chinese but most subjects are taught in english in school. i guess i'm lucky to be exposed to two languages since young. i also read a lot and look up words that i don't understand. i downloaded an application to my phone which is a dictionary. i use it for words i don't understand. it also lets me know the correct pronunciation of the word. i'm proficient in both languages but no where near having good command. i guess i'll keep on learning these two languages for the rest of my life.

Yeah, i had also downloaded a similar application which helped me a lot. Atleast, i dont have to open pages in dictionary, i just put the word in search field and immediately i get the result. Thanks , hope other people will also take help from it.

I know more than a handful of persons that can improve their English and English is their first language. I believe you are doing a wonderful job, try reading aloud and why not thinking in english when you get the chance to chat to friends in English, that way you can speak more fluently vs translating and speaking at the same time.

Thanks for the great idea, i dont get any time for chat but i think the chating i do here on mylot is enough to improve my english. I appreciate your response, happy mylotting!

Being born and living in the UK I am fortunate to have English as my first language. But where I have been fine with the spoken word I have always struggled with the written word. For years my spelling was poor and I seriously struggled with the grammatical structure of the language, such as where to use an apostrophe. But since becoming active as a review writer my grasp of spelling and grammar has been improved thanks to the use of word processing software, in my case MS Word. When I fist started using it I would spend ages going through all the highlighted mistakes, but these days those mistakes are a lot less thanks to learning from repeatedly making corrections. So I would say for those looking to improve their grasp on the written word then a simple way to start would be to use a word processor and learn from your repeated mistakes.

Yeah, you are right. It will definately help those who makes spelling mistakes while writing. I hope people will use this trick to be perfect in english. Happy mylotting!

I think, besides using a word processor, the most important thing is just express your idea and do not afraid of making mistakes.

Hi, friend. My English learning was quite implicit, i.e. i didn`t even notice when i got some way deep into it. I guess it was when i was in 10th standard (about 5 years ago), i virtually suffered from a so called "Reading Mania". In that one year time, i read heaps of books and i think that really helped me improve my english skills. I have seen many people from non-english speaking nations craving for their skills in english. I feel myself lucky not required to do some extra efforts to improve mine. Well, that was because of many good english books, that`s why i consider good books as my companion coz they are always beneficial. Happy Mylotting!!

I was born in Peru, so my mother tongue is Spanish, but I started learning English in school from the time I was 6. I was not until I was 16 years old that I could go to the USA for 3 months and that gave me the opportunity to practice and improve my English. Shortly afterwards my family migrated to Australia and I went to University, but by then English started to become my main language. I think one of the main ways to learn a language is watching television, although now that we have the Internet that can also be a big help!

Yeah, migrating to an english speaking country is the best way to learn english. I dont think, the english lessons taught in schools help any more. Happy mylotting!

mostly I learned english through reading a lot of good books and of course at school. I improve my verbal skill through reading our loud and communicating frequently with some international friends , watching CNN and mimicking them , vocabulary skills are improve through dictionaries and for grammar it would be at school and good english guide books.

Hi just4you, first of all a word of reassurance, if you can read and write in your own language but are still not fluent in English then no one could consider you illterate as that is the inability to read and write at all. English may be the international language but people should still retain pride in their own language and be aware that many people who have English as a native language do not bother to learn a second language or struggle greatly to learn one. My first language is English, and learning Greek, the language around me, is a continual on-going process. Whilst I can read and write in Greek there is no way I would be able to tackle Mylot in Greek so well done to all those English language learners who are brave enough to post here in a language not their own. Tips - break words down into syllables and stress each one slowly to aid correct pronounciation.

Yes, i agree with you. You put forward a nice opinion, well, its not just our hobby to learn english but it is compulsary to move with the time. There are very less fields where english is not used so we have learn it at any cost . Thanks and happy mylotting!

I have to thank my country's inefficient public tv network. When Dallas was on, I had to rely on the Malay subtitle to know what was going on - discussion, argument etc between the Ewings. And then at times, the subtitles were lagging.. I had no choice but to listen to the English conversation, instead of reading the Malay subtext. So, thanks to Dallas, and of course Michael Jackson's Beat It. The lyrics had to be learned in English. : )
