Twice in one week the cars behind me beeped the minute the light turned red. How annoying! When I approach a red light, should I be staring at it for the next 3-5 minutes to watch it turn green, so I can hammer down on the gas pedal immediately, in order to get everyone behind me thru the light?...should I not look away for a mere second to observe something,in case it turns red. How impatient can people be?
Okay, now I feel better...thanks for listening!

Hi Sweetchariot, I don't actually beep myself but the more Greek I get the more I am likely to adopt the habit. Traffic lights here are really really irritating. They literally allow no more than four to five cars through before they change again. So I can understand when someone beeps if the car in front is idling instead of speeding through. Here it happens all the time at lights, it's just a way of life and beeping isn't considered to be offensive. It is also used continually when two cars pass each other and know the other driver, and often by the car overtaking you just to let you know in case you were too busy drinking coffee and chatting on your mobile to have noticed. It is also continual when someone has double parked and blocked you in. However beeping is considered rude if two cars have stopped to chat to each other and thus block the road, relax, they'll be done eventually, just don't do it at traffic lights. And remember no beeping in villages during siesta hour.

Good to see that you can used of those beeps! I would be more irritated at all those horns...lol ... Around here, the only beeps that often take place are the ones when you know someone, or if you are completely irritated at what the driver around you did, possibly cutting you off. Other than that, you don't often hear drivers beeping their horn. Except of course, when they are impatient on waiting for the driver ahead of them.

my husband waits a few seconds before he beeps but the people around here don't pay attention to the lights because they are on the phone or reading a book or putting on makeup so we have to sit through a green lite because people are not paying attention so when others beep it gets there attention .

I can see if someone waits a 5 seconds or so, giving the person in front of them the benefit of the doubt that they will see the green light, but anyone who beeps within 2 seconds, is just discourteous.

Nope, I hardly ever horn unless I'm about to get into an accident. But, I come across those nuts too who horns as soon as the light turns red. It is THE MOST annoying thing, and I'm sure it irritates a lot of people also besides us. They have no other reason to do that besides:
1.) They have short patience
2.) They are bored
3.) They never had any discipline when they learned how to drive
4.) They are ignorant

My vote is #4...and I might add a #5 - just plain rude.
Thanks for your input
