This could have resulted because:
1. Your password was too easy to guess. If your password is just a word, a hacker can launch a dictionary attack on your account and find the password.
2. You entered your email on a phishing website. A phishing website is a site that appears to be a legit site but when entering your credentials the information you typed (including your password) will be sent to the owner of the site. Many websites try to do its best and protect its user from phishing websites.
3. You have a keylogger on your computer. A file you downloaded from the internet may have had a keylogger attached to it and installed on your computer. A keylogger is a program that records everything that you type on your keyboard and is then sent to the person who originally made it. He can then use this information to easily access your email account.
These are just a few main reasons that may have resulted in your email being hacked. Gmail is just as secure as other email clients and I dont think you should stop using it. Try changing your password to something harder and be extremely careful to which sites your accessing.

Oh.. that's really very sad.. It happened to me once. My yahoo got hacked but before he change the password, I did.. but mostly it's of course either keylogger or your some close friend could easily guess it. just scan your system once.. and if you don't find any virus.. just rush to your friend's home :-)

It happened to me in 2005. A friend hacked my password, he was with me when i was recovering it after i forgot it and he saw the new password yahoo gave. He left and went ahead to change before i did. It could be keyloggers, or use of bruteforce.

I have never faced this problem. I use gmail the most, even though I have an account with rediffmail. I feel that gmail is very user friendly and the speed is very good when we attach documents. I have never heard about this kind of a problem with gmail. I should be careful. Once my room mates email was hacked by a friend, but the fact is she has used her username as password too. I advise you to user a diffcult password with lots of characters, numbers, etc.
