As a young child I liked Diet DR. Pepper, and Fresca, neither of those tasted "diet" to me. That was when they used cyclamates for sweeteners as well.

I heard of it, but didn't know the specifics until I did a little research.
Susan Fowler of the University of Texas Health Science Center did a study on 1500 Hispanic and White non-Hispanic, and found those who drank one can of diet soda a day increases the chances of obesity 41%. They not that it is not saying that diet soda causes obesity, but that there is connection that needs further investigating. One theory is that the pseudo-sugar drink is telling the brain to expect sugar in the digestive system, so it sets up all the enzymes and hormones to deal with it, but guess what? There is no sugar. And so the body sends out craving impulses, "Hey! Where's the sugar?" And so a person eats more.

I found another study regarding "metabolic syndrome — the collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes that include abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and blood glucose levels, and elevated blood pressure." Here they found a 34% higher rate of the syndrome when one drinks one can of diet soda a day. Again, they are wondering if it is the actual soda, or the behavior of diet-soda drinkers.

Here is another article, reminding everyone that just changing your drink is not a "diet" - with a humorous illustration from Alice in Wonderland:

I have also seen that in an online column about endocrinology. I do know that the sweet stuff makes you crave more sweet stuff. Soda is bad for your bones. I had a friend who always said she would rather give her kids sugar than artificial sweetener, because we KNOW what sugar does in the body, but not what artificial stuff does. ( She was a science teacher).

Diet soda is a fovourite drink of men, women and children around the world. It is a good drink to refresh us from heat. But many studies have shown that drinking regular or diet soda causes many health problems in humans. It is high in sugar and calories.Drinl=king diet soda causes obesity. It also causes high risks of heart diseases and diabeties. The sugar content in diet soda causes tooth problems and its acidic properties may effect the enamel of teeth.
I suggest not to drink diet soda, though it is tasteful, replace it with fruit juices.
