How to inform someone that he/she is having body ordour without offending them?

Have you ever encountered any of your colleague, friend, family members or even your partner having bad body ordour? I had it the hard way. My former employer/boss was terrible when it comes to body ordour. I can smell it from the moment she steps into the office. How the heck was I suppose to let her know? She was my boss and if she got offended, you can just imagine how hard my life in that office would be. To make matters worst, she pour a galloon of perfume on herself thinking that the perfume will somehow cover her BO. Sigh, I suffered silently until I can suffer no more and quit. I just dont have the guts to tell her. She has been mean to all the subordinates, it just freaks me out what will become of me if I were to tell her anything bout her body ordour. So tell me, if you were in my position, how would you tackle the problem? Will you just quit, or will you tactfully tell her? If yes, how would you tell her without offending her?

Put in a gift-wrapped box roll-on deodourant and a note that tells her the stale pickles in her office is coming from her armpits... LoL... Leave it on her desk... ^_^

That is like so cute! Icehut I like your idea. Now that I've resigned I think I might just do that! Thanx for the idea!

I would buy her a bottle of deodorant, soap, and room spray and wrap it with a typed note informing that the deodorant and soap need to be used on a daily basis and the room spray is to help remove the after smell. Also include in the note that the over abundance of perfume is worse than just the BO, and the BO is bad enough. Tact and worrying about offending someone doesn't work in this kind of situation. I had a friend that was the same way. He wasn't homeless, just lazy. I tried once complimenting him on the fact that he smelled so nice...he replied that he had taken a shower that morning. The next time we met he stunk worse than a skunk. So much for tact! I took him on a day trip with me, and I was very flat footed that he HAD to take a shower before we left otherwise he couldn't go. He showered that time, but not much after that. Also, he had several accidents when we would meet for our day out, and he would go home and change the poopie underware but not his trousers. Needless to say the friendship didn't last too long because I couldn't stand the smell. I also would get room spray and a solid room deodorizer for my office. When she is half way out the door I would spray the room spray...in hopes she might get the hint. She might not have a good sense of smell, because usually people like that can't smell themselves or have gotten to the point that they are impervious to their own odor. I really feel for you, as I spent a lot of time with my car windows open with my ex friend and his stench!

He has some serious mental and emotional problems! Also he is extremely lazy (I spent 6 weeks cleaning his house from top to bottom and in less than two weeks it didn't look like I touched it. There was dirty clothes that were three feet deep in the laundry room. Dishes got done once a month when his brother arrived for a visit. The list could go on for pages. ) Anyhow, it was the mental and emotional problems that finally destroyed the friendship. He also really needs to see a doctor about the bowel problems, but he wouldn't dream of seeing one for that...(he saw a doctor about the impotence problem...this was a man who couldn't even buy a date yet he was worried about THAT!) Anyhow, I am so glad that you had a good laugh. It makes my day when I know I made someone laugh!

Hahaha, your friend sounds terrible. The fact that he stunk worst than a skunk, I just couldnt help myself from laughing! I like the way you put it all out here. I pity your friends to be having so many 'accidents'. Why is he like that?

Well if it was my boss I don't think I would say anything. I think those sort of things are better received when they come from a close friend, or at least someone who cares for you. If I were you, I'd ignore it! I can't imagine that someones body odour would be so bad I'd want to quit my job!

Then you should apply to work under her to get to smell her odour! Really can make you faint I tell you! But who cares, I've left and now, my boss smells so much nicer!

I'm a blunt kind of person. I worked at a place where the guy opposed to me had a really bad body odor. I walked passed and told him to follow me, I needed to talk to him. We went between a couple of warehouse racks and asked him if he wanted to keep his job. He said he hadn't thought about it. So I said "well, your going to lose it if you don't go home and clean yourself up because you stink awful and their going to fire you". He was shocked a bit, then asked me when. I told him go home right now and clean up. Lunch break was right about then, and I told the manager what I had done, and he agreed if he came in late, he'd let it slide provided he didn't stink anymore. Sadly, he did kind of clean up, but not really enough. So he only lasted a month after that. So, yeah I'm a bit blunt. Of course you never try that with someone who is your boss or manager. I had a manager who didn't have a body odor problem, but a breath problem. His breath could melt steel. I was so bad that often you found yourself slowly backing away when he started talking to you. Most we ever did was walk by his deck when he was not there, and nowhere near by, and drop some breath mints or tic tacs on it, and never never never admit to doing it.

Andy I like the way you guys drop some breath mints and never admit to doing it! Way cool! I personally think bad breath is even worst than BO. Bad breath is really fatal to people who had to smell it!!!

I am lucky so far because although I have encountered people with a BO problem I haven't really had to stay around them for long periods of time. Like you, I wouldn't have a clue how to approach someone about their BO problem in a work situation. I do like some of the previous suggestions about gift-wrapping deodorant. They made me laugh Maybe sending a note annonomously about their body odur problem would be a good idea. I have heard that some people's body odur is a sign that they have an illness, so the note could be written from the perspective that you are concerned about their health? Also, I wonder if making some leaflets about 'how to avoid BO in the workplace' and leaving them around the work place would have helped? This way you are not targeting her specifically, but if she saw the leaflet she might take some time to assess her own BO. I don't think I would be able to tell someone like your former employer face to face, especially from how you described her. Tact is definitely needed if you were to tell her. But honestly, I think I would just end up saying something that might be taken the wrong way. So an anonomous note, gift or leaflet would be my choice.

Hi, it all depends on how closed the person to me. 1)My family member - I will straight tell them - but in a nice way. Buy for them roll-on (but bad for health - could be cancerous- short term use should be okay, I guess!) Also get them body scrub, body scrub help to clean the body thoroughly. It help to keep the level of BO. Recommended nice fragrance....smell good, feel good! 2) Not so close, give a hint...like... someone you know (created one / anonymous)) have bad BO, but by using (****as above***), she is off from this problem. Perhaps asked her whether she want to order one for someone she might knew having this problem! 3) Tell her that since she is your boss, you like her and treated her like a family member..therefore you want the best for her, willing to take all chances to "face to face" and help her, be sincere :D, tks!

It is difficult to tell someone that he or she has a body odor. In your case it is your boss it is hard to tell her in a way that she would not be offended. You never mentioned if your boss is a foreigner or not. Some nationalities don't take a bath very often because of their culture. In the Philippines the remedy for body odor is Tawas.

hi iriene, even if my sister has BO, I dare not tell her off. I find people to be extra sensitive when it comes to this issue. It's like people coming straight to my face telling me I am fat! No matter how gentle they put it, it still stinks! LOL... someone's got to do it. In my case, it wasnt me as I am now far far away from her!

My suggestion would be saying these words to her, " What brand of soap are you using? or "Are you using a male body spray or deodorant?". It may work at least you are not pointing directly to her that she has body odor. Or you can say to her that if she's taking lots of iron supplements lately. It will eventually be evident in her sweat due to the metallic odor of iron believe me!

Really? Iron supplements? That is the first time I heard of that. I like the technique of asking her what brand of soap she is using or the deodorant. That can really help to open up the conversation towards that BO. Those might have chances to work I think. Thanx!

I don't think I would have quite but I would have gave her all teh hints posible. I think I would of started with asking her what would be a good thing for me to do because my deodorants were not working even if it was. If she did not change I would tell her that I found a good deodorant and that she should try it because it smelled great and I will also tell her that it made me feal fresh and atractive or what ever I imagined that she would want to feal like. If it was just a friend or family I would tell them "you don't smell that good" or "you stinck" because I know them and they know how I am. My step dad smells really bad most of the time and I can't be so straigt with him because he is older. But I have told him that he should take a shower so he can relax also if I invite him to go out with me on the car I would tell him to celan up so he sould look nice when he is out with me so they can see how good looking he is. I have told him many ways but I always try it in a nice way since he is aournd 80 years old.

You stink! Whoa, that is so cool to be said to someone close to you! Ha ha. I like your approach towards the someone not too close, using ourselves as an example first and slowly redirecting it towards her. That might actually work. Thank you!

interesting topic, it made me laugh. i had a classmate once who smelled. and what's more embarrasing was that she was a girl and we were close. it was when we were in highschool and when i met up with her recently, after 10 years, what surprised me was that, she still have that distinctive smell. so i guess nobody was brave enough to tell her she had BO, not even me. i really don't know how you could say such a thing without making that person feel bad. i guess you just have to say it for her benefit, even if he/she might feel bad. later on, if you were brave enough to do it, i'm sure he/she will thank you for doing it. like in my case, when i reached puberty stage my mother told me that i smelled. she didn't even say it in a gentle way. she just told me, "hey norvin you smell! go buy yourself some deodorant!" she was really meand and i was like, OUCH! but now i thank my mom for telling me that. it would have been more embrassing if someone else said that, right? moms are great!

If i were in you shoes at that time. simple, if i can't take it anymore i would surely wear a face mask and then start working at the office. then, if my boss would see me like that and ask why, i should just tell her, Swine fule mam, i am just being cautious because my neighbor got one last night. then ecourage er to have one as well, as an excuse.

hmmmpf, whenever you boss is passing your desk, try to discuss a DEODORANT matters with the other employees, who knows, after she heard you, she might smell her self..haha, but i tell you, most of the people who have Body Odor, cannot smell them even if they put their nose next to their armpits, i just don't know why..my sister is like that, i am having a hard time telling her that she has it but she always says to me smell yourself first..haha, when in fact i smell great..until such time she realized that she need to put a deodorant..haha, anyways, your boss will be able to know that she has this BO when somebody has the guts to tell in front of her face that she really has it..for now, although you can't take the smell anymore, just don't bother telling her, or if you cared for her, leave a note telling her to use a new product (not knowing its a deodorant), who knows she might get interested int hat note and tries to buy it on the department store..hehe

Stay away but make him feel that I am staying away due to her body odour? That's a good one. Indirectly telling her so that she wont get offended.

I did had a classmate, and her smell is totally bad, it's like ginger with garlic with onions OMG it was so bad....Everyone in the class is moving away from her everytime she comes.I was only one in the class who planned to advise her to use deodorants, so I did is talk to her and stared talking about the perfumes I use, the deodorants I use..I try to tell her that all those deodorants works hehe...But I guess I failed to convinced her that she needs to use it

What do you mean by "Will you just quit"? Do you mean quit the job because of her foul odor or do you mean quit as in not tell her about the odor in front of her face? Yes, I have encountered some, but it's understandable. Homeless people don't have a home like us so they don't take any showers. I understand that some people from other countries don't take showers or baths everyday, their custom is like that. Someone people just came from the gym or doing hard labor work so you can smell their sweats. And people who fart, it's understandable. lol I've never been in your position. But if you are afraid to confront the boss the truth alone, then you should tell your colleagues to come with you to confront her. If the perfume doesn't work on her, then I don't think the deodorant will work. lol If your colleagues are unwilling to come with you to confront her and you don't want to tell it to her face, then you should write a polite letter telling her that her odor is offending you and other employees at work but you guys are hesitant to tell her because you guys don't want to offend her, also say that you guys would appreciate it if she maintains a good hygiene because that would help with everyone's health and air at the workplace and everyone can work more efficiently and effectively. Tell her it's nothing personal and give her compliments. Maybe buy flowers and put the letter in the flowers and put it on her desk or ask them to deliver the flowers to her? lol If you or anyone else don't tell her the truth, you will continue to have this problem so if I were you I will tell her politely, the faster the better. Do you know what's the reason why your boss has bad body odor?

iwinagain, I really appreciate your thorough idea on how to tackle this problem. What I meant by 'will you just quit' is that, will you just leave the job? As I really cant stand working in that environment. I do not know what causes her body odor, but boy, I dont think she is homeless!

submerryn... I will fork out from my pocket and buy her a bottle of nice perfume (must be the fragrant I like), then give it to her on her birthday or whatsoever excuse that I can find... then next day if I smell the same, I asked her, "you don't like the perfume I gift you?" can change you know... LOL... I am sure for a few times I asked, she will know what I mean right? She is sitting at the top of me being a supervisor, I am sure she is smart to get my hint...:p
