A friend of mine sent me a list of things to do about different things the other day. I had seen most of them but one was about ants which i have been bothered w/lately. I had bought spray to get rid of them & it did kill them but i still had them. In this list it said ants would not cross a chalk line. I had a tub of chalk i had bought for my grandson so i get it out & chalked around my door, around the dumpster & other places i had seen them on the carport. I also went around the back of my counter tops & i do believe it's working. Thought it might help some of y'all to. Have u been bothered by ants?

I have never heard of this one but I am happy thaty it works for you. I don't really have many ants at home - only when it may rain and then they appear - I don't know where they hide in hot weather!

When I woke up this morning, there are ants in my kitchen. I am a super clean freak, so I don't know where they are coming from!! I told my man before he left for work this morning that tonight we are going to pull out the oven in case there is something back there they want...but when I started watching them, they are actually coming out from under my carpet. I dont know why they are doing this, unless they are coming from the apartment below me. So, today I am going to scrub my kitchen floor and pull out my oven...hopefully that will stop them. Right now, I just feel like I have ants crawling all over me.

Ants - Red ants
Ants are more prominent in tropical countries. I do have lots of trouble with ants, red, black and all sizes of ants are found in my place. Ants bite are as painful as a jab in the hospital. I always pour kerosene onto their nest but that won't eradicate them totally. Thanks for your tips and sure will experiment it in future.

My dad has a real ant problem. He has alot of trees in his yard so that may be why. THere are trails of ants throughout the yard. They are only sugar ants but still they are everywhere. They get in his house and they get on stuff. I was thinking of trying a recommended idea. Someone said to sprinkle grits around then the ants will eat the grits. ONce they eat the grits the grits will expand and kill the ants. Dont know if it works but I may end up trying it. Would do the chalk but I doubt it would work with the infestation we have.

That's too bad y'all are so bothered w/them. U could put the chalk around the doors i guess, that might help. I hadn't heard about grits but have heard meal would do the same thing. I don't want any varmits in my house but me & my dog. Hope y'all get rid of them however. Thanks for your response. Happy days to u.

There is also another way to help with the ants as well as other rodents at times. Like under my house it is dirt, so I put down like a cover to a plastic container with soda in it. Why, because of the carbonation of the drink, they can't pass gas. I know it isn't the best or humane way, but it was real bad here when they were working on the roads. The mice and rats all seemed to be looking for a new home. So that has also worked here. The Cinnamon one works good in the house for ants that I do agree with. I have been using that one as well.

Use boric powder which we use for carrom, ant and cockroches will disappear withing 1 week, have patience and try this out. Or you can use Kerocine, which ant dont like.

Here where i live we have those little black fire ants. When they bite it really hurts. We had some move into the handles of the shower last year. we have clear plastic handles. Any way I took the handles off and put baking soda in them and the ants left. My daughter in Michigan told me about using baking soda for them. Years ago I was visiting my ex's grandmother and she had a corn cob sitting on the counter. I ask her why and she said for ants. I thought she was nuts. but when the ants decided to come into to my house I decided to try it and found that it really works. I now keep a field corn cob in my kitchen all the time.

If you do not have chalk, you can put down a line of salt, or baking soda. It scrubs their exoskeleton off and they dehydrate if the cross it. Baby powder or talc also works. My friend just wipes everything down with white vinegar and she says it works. I am glad the chalk is working for you.

Thanks GG, I keep white vinegar on hand so that would be no problem. If i think the chalk stops working i'll try that. Be a good way to clean everything anyway. Have a happy day.

I have never heard of this but I can believe it. In the past I had problems with ants and would buy the spray at the store and did not have much luck with it. Besides I hated that chemical smell in my house and when I used it. I had used Diazinon before and it worked pretty good for a while but they always seemed to return. I hesitated using it because I have a dog and even though she is inside most of the time I would still worry and also could not use the Diazinon inside for that very reason. I then went online to look for alternative and maybe more natural ways of keeping the ants away. There were several remedies but I picked one and have used ever since, kinda reminds me of your chalk. It was talc, perfumed talc seemed to work faster and better. It was kinda messy, especially in the house initially, but it sure did keep them away. This was a couple years ago and I no longer need to use in the house any longer. Each spring I put some talc outside the house and in the garage and no ants - anyway at least it has worked for me. I just use the cheap talc powder from the dollar store and it works.

Yes I hate those things. In my house there's a whole bunch of ants. I think you can might form a humongous ant hole. I don't know where they are coming from but there annoying because they always crawling on me at night. I don't have anything to do to get rid of them because if I use bug spray than there will still be a lot of ants in my house. Honestly I used to be scared of ants but now that there are so many ants in my house I got used to it. I want ants out of my house I just dont know how to get them out. YUCK.

Hi If I am wrong you can call me any name in the book if you want. Go buy yourself the box of Terro for ants. I have posted the results of what it does but I am telling you this stuff should have sold for a lot of money but it's cheap. I do not have any interest in the company, I just buy this stuff. For the few bucks it costs, you will be amazed. Terro comes in an orange box at walmart or any such store and you get I believe 4 trays in it. Within a day or two you will not see anymore ants. Read what I posted on the page about it. This stuff is like a Miracle and is well worth the money. It's the first time I bought something in my life that really does work like it should. You get several trays in the box, cut small slit where it shows you and place the little trays where the ants seem to be the worse. You can place 1 or 2 in the kitchen or even around the doorway. Anywhere your having ants. They go to it, some get trapped and some get out but the ones that get out take the syrup in the tray back to the colony and it kills all of the colony.

I have never heard of using chalk to kill ants. Thank you for sharing this. I have also heard that you can use honey or bread crumbs to kill ants. I got this off the internet several years ago from A Farmer. What you do, is boil a pan of water, pour honey or bread crumbs on top of the ant beds. Then, pour the boiling water on the ant beds and it will kill them. I have a lot of fire ant beds all over my yard! Kathy.

i hate ants to but they are part of nature they kind of help us by carrying other pests that we kill for example you kill a cockroach but you're to lazy to clean it up in a few minutes or hours ants start to appear carrying cockroach to their nest. There are many explanations but in short we are all part of a very big circle of life

When we moved into this house, the owner admitted he had had an ant problem. Sure enough that summer the critters came in hoards. I am allergic to household sprays, so for a few years I really was at there mercy. Last year I started spraying them whenever I seen them with household cleaners...killed them on the spot. After doing the dishes, I would spread liquid dish detergent around the sink and I noticed a drop in the numbers. So this year, I upped my program and started searching for natural methods for eliminating these pest. I read a few articles that said they hate cynamin, so I started sprinkling the spice everywhere and I think it slowed the invasion a bit, there was quite a drop in there numbers. But some were still around, so I started leaving comet in the sink...buggers really hate the stuff and the numbers dropped even more. Right now I have my trash bin sitting on a tray that's covered with Comet, never see any of the guys anywhere near the garbage container. Now I have found this awesome guide, those fellows are really in trouble... because I now have a double barreled arsenal... they just don't stand a chance. I would like to extend a 'really warm thanks to everyone' for all the info shared in this thread and now the final battle starts...those 'pains in the tush' will just have to find another residence cuz I'm closing this self-serve buffet...

I use Dawn Dish washing soap to kill spiders in my tub and in my kithen sink. Also, mint mouth wash in a spray bottle gets spiders that's hard to reach. And, so far so good on the spiders in this house !

Ants, spiders, earwicks. Someone told me before red pepper and/or salt will keep the ants out. Sprinkling around at the baseboards. One day i put the cats wet (canned) food dish in the middle of the kitchen 30 min. later i go to the kitchen and theres a trail of ants coming from the baseboard to the food dish. They dont go to the dry food just the wet.

@ timelord50...I also use comet and it has made a big difference in the numbers of ants that have invaded my kitchen. Nothing I like more than using regular household products as opposed to buying expensive preparation that may or may not work...

I will try what you did. The ants here are really disgusting. There was a time when some of our shirts in the cabinet was bitten by them.

Now that is an idea! Last year, I learned pests do not like mint---hmmm? So, I had ants in my kitchen making a trail on the top of my cabinet--- So, went to Wal Mart and bought some Extreme Mint tooth paste and used it like you did your calking. Got rid my ants on that cabinet---turned around and they were on my window sill, so used the tooth paste there too. No more ants! I think the idea is to get rid of their new found trail and that should stop them. I do have what is call carpenter ants that are supposed to eat wood, wonder if I could caulk around the porch with caulking? Might give it a try! quita88

Hi ! thanks for your idea too ! I guess we all use whatever works for us . right now, I'm having trouble with bees in my humming bird feeders, but last year a lady told me to use/spray them with WD40 and it works ! I have these big,bad bald face hornets too and the WD40 takes them down like nothing else I've ever seen! Summer is great except for the pests but sounds like we are getting rid of some of them !!
