Are we sick because we are poor? Or are we poor because we are sick?

This has been an undying question when I was a nursing student. Being in a third world country, I should say we are sick because we are poor. A lot of people could not gain access to proper health care because of limited financial resources. They do not have stable jobs and receive a small pay, hence, they prefer to self-medicate rather than seeking professional health care.
I would like to know your views regarding on this. Thank you. happy mylotting!

hello there former classmate! it's so nice to see you active here in mylot. are you enjoying it here so far? hmmm, anyway, i remember this question raised in our classroom. this is a very difficult question. it's very similar to the question of which came first between an egg and a chicken. :-)
well, since you're asking for an opinion i would say the former statement holds more water than the latter. it's just like a cause and effect thing. the main cause or reason why many of the citizens in our country are ill is because they cannot afford proper health care. they do not have the means to be healthy. as what we have learned from our lessons, being sick has multifactoral causes. it could be environmental, lack of economic resources, etc. i think if our people only had the means to be healthy, they would actually have it. but because of the lack of resources and government supplies, most of the people are sick. if you look at the world today it's not hard to see that the poorer the country gets, the sicker their people are. look at africa... they have the poorest of the poor there. some of them cannot even afford to eat for days. and what have we heard about africa's morbidity? it's all over the news that it has the leading number in AIDS, malnutrition, and other illnesses.
in conclusion, i should say that the filipino are sick because we are poor. hope this helps... happy mylotting!

i agree with you that something should be done about this. it's sad that there are millions of people not getting the proper health care that they deserve. it's sounds so ideal when you we say that health is a right. what most people do not realize though is that not all people are getting the proper medical treatment that they need. these are only limited to privileged developed countries. i think it's high time that they should share their wealth.

Thank you Tomjoad! very well said..... Indeed, global poverty has brought a lot of change to one's life, and sadly, what is greatly compromised is our health. I hope that the UN or those in the authority and the capability to reach some help can address the effects of this global phenomenon most countries experience, especially that of Africa. After all, we are all brothers and sisters in the eyes of God. Love, unity and peace should bind us all and not greed, fame, power or money, Thank you Tom!

Hello there! I find your discussion really interesting and I am happy to respond to it. I believe we are sick because we are poor because if we have money we can prevent ourselves to become sick every now and then as we would be able to take better care of ourselves so now atleast we would get ill less often than the person who is poor and cannot afford good living to avoid illness. I remember I had fallen ill and my boss told me that I have no right to get ill. So illness is not a pre planned thing, but it happens so everyone can fall ill and the one who is poor can fall ill very often than the one who can afford the expenses of getting ill.

Thanks dear. I greatly appreciate people who respond to discussions like this. I agree to what you believe. I hope that more jobs and other means of living shall be provided to the third world countries so as to uplift their economic status, and then avoid getting sick; and if sick, could be promptly treated. Being sick affects one's productivity. Nobody ones to get sick. But because this is inevitable, brought about by varied factors, then the responsibility lies to every individual- to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Thanks again my dear. Happy mylotting!
