Hi friends, I know I am going to p...s some people off with this observation if you will. I was sitting at the lake just listening to music in my car today. Such a beautiful day, I could not resist. I have been looking for work for a while. I have also been to the doctor many times for my back which gives out on me regularly and sometimes just has me in tears. Anyway, I have never had any luck with disability. I find this totally unfair. Because back pain is so hard to see, I find we just get pushed to the side as pill seekers and such. There was a woman sitting there, maybe 350 pounds. I could tell she was well dressed and well kept and I thought to myself, she probably gets disability because she is morbidly obese and her knees obviously are giving out on her. Now there is someone, I am sorry, that has brought it on herself by gaining so much weight. So in order for me to get disability, I guess I have to get myself way over weight and then they may consider me for disability. I don't know, sometimes I just don't understand life in general. Like I said, I am not out to offend, I am simply stating my case for what it's worth. Cheryl

Hi. I totally agree with you that it is hard to get disability. I have tried a couple of times because of "other health issues". I went through many years of not knowing I had a problem before I was finally diagnose as having ADHD, tourette syndrome and asperger syndrome (high functioning autism). I always had difficulty holding a job and getting through school, but people think that I can cope anyway. Sometimes I feel really helpless, but there is nothing to be done. The powers that be are convinced I don't have a problem. I wouldn't want to put on that much weight. It bothers me to think I'm 30 pounds overweight. I have a hard enough time functioning without having that to deal with. Good luck on getting your disability. I guess you could just keep trying and eventually you might make it.

One of my friends with autism, he is high functioning but not high enough to be aspergers, has problems as well. He has disability but he gets harrassed over it because people think its a scam, poor thing had to walk 2 miles home one time because he had money for the bus, the price for disability, he had his card thing, but the driver thought it was a fake because he looks normal and generally acts normal, so they wouldn't let him on the bus This was a couple of years ago, his parents called the bus organization and needless to say, no bus driver ever questions someone like that. That is terrible that you cannot get disability and only adds to my steadfast belief that there needs to be more governmental focus on disabilities and mental hardships like the syndromes that you cope with. There is much more focus on Autism and Aspergers, but there needs to be more because there are still SOOOO many out there that still do not realize that autism is a spectrum disorder, and not everyone with autism is the same, anyone with any type of disability is the same. Sorry for the rant, it is just something that I am very passionate about.

Thanks for getting back to me. I also feel strongly about this. Sometimes it helps to let out a rant. When we get together on this kind of thing, it helps all of us to get the frustration out. Have a great day!!!

I know exactly what you mean and I don't like it either, there was one time that I had words with one man who wasn't morbidly obese, but sort of overweight and he ran in front of this old lady to get the last driving cart, he had some sort of card that said he was disabled, and at first I said "hey can you just wait for another cart to come in, this woman really needs it"? and the jerk said "I was here first" and took off, I was so mad that I followed him and was quite mean to him and did cause a scene, but I am sorry but when an elderly woman has to stand with her walker and wait while some person who only gets disability because they are a lazy fatso gets to drive around in the motorized cart, i screamed "maybe it would do you good to get off your fat a$$ and walk some!"

you are probably right when you say that this discussion will tick some people off, but I know what your getting at. I have see a lot of people getting disability that could work just the same as I can. Then I've seen others that I know are not able to work and can't get nothing. Sometimes to me it is unfair, my ex husband has even had back surgery two times and can't hardly get around but still can't get it. But the main thing that gets the best of me is, the fact that all of us hard working people has to support those people that are able to work and could be making a living themselves. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about the people that really needs help here.
