Tasks---Whats the point?

I took on a task tonight. I read the instructions 3 times before I accepted. During the task, which was alloted 2 hours, I repeatedly refered back to the step by step instructions to make sure I was doing it right. Even though I chose a topic to search/research that appeals to me very much I just didn't get it.
After 1 hour of searching, clicking, reading, putting the site through a mental checklist, rejecting said site, moving on to the next one and starting the whole process over again I quit! Either I was doing it wrong or there was something very fishy about this task.
I'm NOT meaning to cause trouble in any way. I just have a few legitimate questions for seasoned mylotters.
1. What is the point of a task where the end result is providing someone with an email address?
2. Is it so they can email these people and try to sell them something?
3. Do you have to accept cookies at these sites? They looked thrown together and a little on the cheesy side.
4. Are all tasks searching for peoples email addresses or clicking on ads?
5. What am I doing wrong here?
