Facebook--It's a full time job!

I spent almost a year smiling and nodding at people that constantly told me "You really should get Facebook. It's so much fun." I was accused of being anti social, behind the times, a stick in the mud, old and set in my ways (I'm 47) and my all time favorite not computer savvy! Me, the person that spends a minimum of 4 hours online every day. Not on email, IM or message boards either. Me, one of the first people to get a home computer and the internet because I'm married to an electronic gadget nut that works for the cable company. Whatever! I was surfing the net for hours at a time while on bed rest waiting for my daughter to be born. The daughter that just turned 16 years old! Anyway, I finally I decided to see what Facebook was all about. I spent SIX hours clicking links, searching for friends, imputting information, etc... And I never even scratched the surface. It was becoming an obsession. Learn this, post that, upload a photo, take this poll, share something, be this persons friend, become a fan of, write on the wall (as a mother this bothers me alot), poke people, answer email, instant message, somebody wrote on your wall (do I have to clean that up?), build your family tree, take a test, and so on. My head was spinning! I realized that I just couldn't keep up no matter how hard I tried. I actually have 20 something friends and I treasure each and every one of them. However, I now only login about once a week. Until Facebook pays me to be there I refuse to spend hours at a time on that one site. Its a full-time job without pay.

Well this is my first post. I thought I would try my hand at replying. Anyway, I joined Facebook two weeks ago. At first I was entertained and impressed. Then very quickly it got boring. I added family and reading their posts was almost like Twitter, "I am at a restaurant now, I am eating an ice cream cone, I am playing a game." I was told that my "wall writing" was too long. I should keep it shorter. I was unaware that there were rules for writing on the wall! LOL Well at least I signed up and found out what it was all about. I have only gone there a couple times after I signed up. Another thing I find puzzling is the strangers that ask to be my friend. Ah well, it was a learning experience to say the least.

HA, I KNEW IT! Thank you anycegal. I tried to tell yall, writing on the wall is a no-no :-) I didn't know Facebook had rules about it though. I always got the impression they were just begging me to be bad and write on the walls. I never wrote much but when I did I always expected my mothers face to appear in a pop up window giving me "that look". For everybody that wrote on the walls put yourself in time out, 1 minute for each year of age. And no dancing around in your chairs, kicking the wall or whining about how much longer! All you guys rock!

I like that phrase " Somebody wrote on your wall (do I have to clean that up?)" It makes me chuckle :), I have facebook account but not active. My sister been bugging me to open an account, she nearly give up and she asked me to use hers instead...lol! Anyway after much much bugging from friends & family member, I put up a photo, a blog and wrote some messages on others' walls! So much have to learn, spend many late hours to locate long lost friends, some are correct persons, some are not which later became friends too! You are really a veteran of www, already more than 16 years, you can be my mentor....

Hi Iriene88! Glad you found the humor in my comments. A lot of people just don't get my humor, they feel like I'm being sarcastic and critical. My own husband thinks that, it causes alot of problems.

I spend way to much time there. I keep wondering how much life is passing me by that I dont even realise. I spend at least an hour a night there and when life is busy that is way to much time. I know I need to spend less time there but I just dont. I hop on to check my emails and then I check the clock and an hour or more has passed. That is what I did tonight and look where I am. I should be in bed right now.

Hi cody, The only reason i have a facebook account is to keep in contact with people I have ever met, friends and family... I spent as little amount of time there as possible, just to accept friends, update twitter sometimes, have already linked my blog (just a one-time arrangement), reply to some wall posts/IM and PMs. I have stopped poking others, playing games or spamming others. I don't even upload photos besides my profile pic. I'm just happy that I could remain in touch with my ex-students as well. It's amazing how I could still watch them grow in front of my eyes. Doing bare minimum at Facebook.

I agree with you 100% and to be honest accept for the take this poll I find it boring. I don't want to know everything that each person on my facebook is doing at any given time. Its just to much work and like you said you don't get paid for it.

I couldn't agree enough. I don't mind having a facbook, keeps me in touch with some people that I haven't seen in years & even sometimes my family in different countries, but all the quizzes and the applications can get out of hand. Plus I have facebook on my blackberry and the amount of notifications I get during the day drives me nuts! You're right, a job without pay.

I know what you mean. I go in there to play games every day. It is my one form of relaxation where I don't have to think about anything. I don't do a lot of other things right now, but I did recently find some of my old classmates and am trying to get to know them. Maybe I should put my referral link in there. Who knows, maybe I could get some more people to come over here. Have a great day!!!

Hi cody, Very well said madam. You know, I only been using Facebook for I guess 3 months. And because I was new then, I almost hooked at the site with almost all of my time in the office went to Facebooking. Finally, I told myself, "am I really enjoying facebook?" and "is it worth Facebooking than any other social sites?" or "am I just wasting my time at these sites?". And with these questions, I also came up with some discussions posted about a month or so. And so, I found myself coming back to myLot after a quarter of being absent, wasting time at those sites, with nothing I gained. I went back to myLot, a new beginning for me, a new myLot life for me. At least here, if you happen to decide to make this site a full-time job, it's only leave without pay. Neil

hi cody30103! i basically agree with everything you said about facebook. i have been long a member but i was not so active at that time but afterwards, i got hooked to it. but the only advantage and fun learning too for me on being there is that, i literally enjoyed being in contact with my friends.. especially my classmates in elementary and high school years and even college classmates! it was fun as almost everyone is there and i thought i'm not going to enjoy that at first! .. i tried to limit my applications there as it is really eating up so much time. but i love to write on my friends' walls.. (LOL) .. and really, its like catching up with each others lives again. =)

At least when you write on the walls in Facebook you don't get time out :-)

Facebook sure does earn a lot. But its sick to not pay members. I mean we dont expect it but it would be real good to be that way dont u think? I have my a/c there but never visit it much. Its booring and i feel orkut is much better thou it doesnt pay. But ya other socializing sites serve our purpose of earning so no problem. .;)

Yep Facebook sure knows how to make people waste their precious time...lol I like it there and have over 200 friends I think, but I only go there when I get a friend request or want to contact a long distance friend or see what they are up to! I hate all those stupid games and applications that I am always being invited to join, I always ignore them! I DO NOT care about your silly Mafia War!!! LOL :-) Overall It is a good place to network with others for business and that is one reason why I keep going back, but I do not spend hours there! Life is too short!

If you join facebook for money, then you won't get it vecause facebook jsut a site for meet and search friends. I join facebook because all my high school and elementary friends have it. It helps me a lot when there's not time to meet each other, we can chat, upload photos or playing games together, and plan about our reunion together. It makes me able to keep in touch with my friends,, but it definitely not a place to get some money^^,,

If Facebook pays me to be there, I would have an additional income of $1000 a month.. keeping up with friends, playing some games etc - made me practically staying there. Facebook is like my e-home. Sigh.. But I like to be online. And I don't MSN. So, I guess Facebook will do. The best part is that I find back old friends. That is one of the best part.

down side to face book and my space they don't pay. there's other that do thou. i only wonder in and have a look round face book, i'm not a games person. i'm linked up with a lot of old school friends but we don't talk, so i'm not bothered about them. i talk more now to my best mate than when we wrote via snail mail and on the phone. got a few people i've met over the yrs added in there to. my mums finally joined, but keeps asking me what her password is cause she doesn't see what's so good about it. it's more fun here in mylot any way, least we get to have a good laugh at things and talk

I am over Facebook, havn't been active since I joined myLot, If I had found out about Mylot from the beginning I would have not even bothered with Facebook, I think this is much more interesting that receiving update or applications and getting flooded with constant crap from people you met once. hehe. Mylot is awesome, and at least you receive some $$$ for your contribution.
