Most of us who owns/loves cats cant help but "meoow" lol but do they understand us and can they distinguish it from a real cat to a human sound?.. A few years ago i was riding my bike around our village and hear some kittens crying and so i looked over they have been dumped in an empty lot and i couldnt go down because it was kinda deep and so i kept looking for ways to get it( i even tried a stick but couldn't get to them.. no kittens were hurt in the process^^) and i kinda gave up and just kept staring their helpless self's and then i just "meowed" and saw the black kitten kinda responded because it walked a bit and was kinda looking for something and then i meowwed again the kitten was really trying to find me and so i meowwed for almost like 5-7 minutes straight until i was parched from meowing and for those minutes i meowed until the kitten climbed up to me!! i was so Happy and SHOCKED that it worked but sadly only the black kitten climbed up and his brothers/sister were still at the bottom., and then i gathered up my courage to jump down because if the black kitten could climb up why cant i go down., i took all the kitties to my house but sadly bad news my parents dont want them but i was determined and so i had put them somewhere near our house another empty lot but somewhere i can reach and visit them i fed them with milk and such for 2 days but on the 3rd day they were gone where i had put them which i was really disappointed and asked some people and they didnt know a thing.,. i know that i shouldn't have trespassed and put the kittens their but i had no choice... It was a learning experience for me even though i couldnt have them i still tried to care for them.. but still i coulve done more

You did what you could, I'm guessing you were still young enough to have to be obedient to you parents. I have meowed well enough that cats have been fooled by me. Of course, I have lots of subjects to listen to too.

we can hope that their real mom found them and moved them, or maybe some other person heard them and rescued them

Hi Korki4, that was a wonderful experience. I was touched with your persistence in giving those kittens a HOME. I have 2 Persian Cats and whenever I see them I always make the "Meeeooowww" sound and I always get their attention. They would respond to me when I call them that way. They also like to be called by their names. You have a good heart Korki4, although you thought that you could have done more. At that time, it was the BEST thing you've done. Maybe someday when you have your own home then, you could do more WONDERFUL acts of kindness.

I actually do think cats understand when humans meow. Or at least they register that we're attempting to communicate. I have "conversations" with my cat Yellow Cake through meows. They usually go on for about 4 or 5 meows each. ...Then again I don't know how reliable my mind is because I also talk to my dog. In English. And I believe she understands exactly what I'm saying. So I may just be insane. :3

I'm sure that either the mama cat or another kind person found the kittens & took care of them. My dog is a bit of a cat whisperer - she LOVES cats & they seem to respond to her. I live downtown in a big city & there always seems to be a stray cat around. Luckily they like my dog & want to play with her (me, not so much). I've found that if a stray cat is skittish & reluctant to come near me, if I say "Meep" in a high pitched voice, the cat will respond. I started using that sound when I took in a feral kitten that the local "experts" told me to put out of his misery because feral cats can never be tamed. Idiots! Well, the kitten screamed the first night he came in, the only thing that would calm him was that "Meep". By the way, the feral kitten is now a big suck & does dog tricks (he loves to Roll Over for a dog biscuit). & I sneak him into my friends' office in my purse, & my Quincy cat provides stress relief when they're having a hard day.
