I think they were awesome until the "Blak album", even "Load" has a few good songs, but they started to change their style and began to play more commercial music, they forgot why they play metal and started to play for money. My point of view. In their last album they are trying to recover that old stuff they had in their previous albums, but eventhough it is better than their last 3 albums I consider there's a lack of inspiration and creativity, Kirk is trying to create good solos, but I think he failed when taking into account the speed, level, creativity and technique of his previous solos.
I'm not saying they are a bad band, they are great, I still listen to their best albums and I enjoy them a lot, but I just don't like their musical evolution.

Ya they may play for money but there stuff is still different from all the new "rock bands" they just play the same things. and they are one of the few metal bands that actually care about there music. for example one is a song for military men and women who lose everything while they are wherever in the world they are and don't have a reason to live.

Yes, for the most part I agree with this response. They did change their style for more money and fame.

Metallica were great band in their beginings. They were pure thrash metal band that influenced many younger metal bands. Things started to change on the 'Black Album' They started to soft their sound and makes commercial songs so many of old fans (me too) used to think they betreyed / sold themselves. And that's why I think Metallica couldn't be considered as best band ever. They were great but nowadays they are just one of the commercial pop band!
